LAS VEGAS - Former Boston College star Troy Bell is at the Reebok Vegas Summer League trying to hook on with the New Orleans Hornets. After a 2004-05 season that saw the guard separate from Memphis and spend some time in Spain, Bell is back in business.

``It has been a weird ride. It definitely has,'' Bell said. ``But I wouldn't change anything about it. I left Memphis and I was still kind of hurt because I'd had surgery in the summertime and I hurt my knee again in training camp. Then I went to Spain for two months and then I was in Chicago training with Tim Grover. So now I feel good physically.

``I'm just trying to do whatever a team needs me to do to work my way up. I think it's going pretty good so far. New Orleans has some open roster spots, and hopefully I can fill one of them.''

Hornets coach Byron Scott has the door open.

``We'll see,'' he said. ``We need another point guard, there's no question about that. We have Speedy Claxton and Chris Paul, and we're going to need one more. Troy will probably have to beat out someone else that we're going to bring in. I think he's playing solid. I think he's done some real good things. He's been missing his shot though. He hasn't been making it like I thought he would, but I know that's there and it's going to come around.

``Troy's a tough kid. He plays hard. He's trying to convert himself to being a point guard from being more of a scoring guard. That's something he's going to need to do.''
