Dan Marino? Zero Super Bowl wins, threw for a million yards. Won a lot of games, set all kinds of NFL passing records but only ONE Super Bowl that he LOST!! Had some coach named Shula. Comparing the Shula & Marino era One lost Super Bowl and only 5 playoff games vs the Payton & Brees era One Super Bowl Victory 17 playoff games. By B&G standards make Marino and Shula both BUSTS!!

To be fair, I wouldn’t place Dan Marino on the top ten greatest qb’s of all time. As far as Don Shula, iirc, he was the architect of the”perfect season”, 14 regular season wins, two playoff wins and the SB championship over Washington. Whether the coach is placed on a pedestal is subjective..., me personally, the “perfect season” is an important place in history..., until somebody goes 19-0, then Coach Shula will be forgotten. Until that time...

Edit: and what’s with all the hyperbole about calling Payton or Brees “busts”. I’ve never seen that argument made in my short time here.

Go back and read what I wrote not what you think I said. You conveniently missed the Comparing the Shula & Marino era One lost Super Bowl and only 5 playoff games vs the Payton & Brees era I wasn't talking about Shula's complete body of work. Yours is apples to oranges mine was apples to apples since there has only been a Payton & Brees era for head coach Payton. As for "Bust" replace it with any word you like, failure, flop, not listening to your meat guy! ect. ect.

You've been on the board to know there are some who claim to be better coaches than Payton (The Whole Foods Meat Guy!!!!) and now Brees is a noodle arm. Go back and read all about Our Early Playoff Exits ect. ect. then compare them to the Shula & Marino era One lost Super Bowl and only 5 playoff games vs the Payton & Brees era

Brees has gotten old. And his arm is very much weaker than it was when he was in his prime. He can’t physically run the entire playbook anymore.

As far as Payton, he is a 9-9 playoff record (but conjoined with Brees the entire time) HC with one SB win. Better than 0-18 with zero SB wins, but not as good as 18-0 with three, four or more.

Edit: You have my aplogies if I misunderstood the context of your post.

To me watching Brees in the Tampa Playoff game was as painful as this picture of Y.A. Tittle kneeling, dazed and bloody in his last playoff game. A little triva
Y.A. came back the following year but was benched mid season for Gary Wood an original Saint QB Gary Cuzzo, Bill Killer and Gary Wood. I remember hearing a story that after being inserted into a lopsided Saints game loss he asked the coach "Do you want me to play it close to the vest or try to pull this thing out?"

All I was doing was providing a little context to the "Payton costs Brees at least .......... and Brees was washed up............... Thus the comparison of the greatest NFL coach Don Shula and how he did teamed with Dan Marino. You hear the term "Turnover Machine" well Marino was a "Stat Machine" lots of "Gee Whiz" passing stats but not much else. Lots of Sizzle but no Steak. With Payton and Brees you have to admit there was some Steak to go along with the Sizzle!! and No, I'm not the whole foods meat guy!

I agree. Here is the thing though. I think as competitive as Brees is, I think he needed to know he just couldn't do it physically anymore. As long as he thought he might have a little left, he would keep coming back.

Regardless of how it ended, he helped turn a franchise around. Brought a Superbowl championship to the city and a lot of seasons were we at least had some hope. Hard to complain if you remember the state of the franchise before that.
