New Orleans Saints defensive end Trey Hendrickson's monster season in 2020 came at a good time for the Florida Atlantic product right at the end of his rookie deal.
Hendrickson posted 13½ sacks in 15 regular season games, and he's "going to be an attractive free agent for anyone," Saints general manager Mickey Loomis said Wednesday. "Certainly we want him back," Loomis said, but there's one small hangup for the Saints right now when it comes to Hendrickson and their other players headed for free agency. The salary cap for 2021 hasn't been set yet. Though it's expected to be considerably less after the coronavirus pandemic sent league revenue on a downward spin, Loomis said he doesn't have "even a narrow range" of what to expect. Sign him and get rid of Davenport.

Trey H is about to get paid. And paid at a high premium.
A franchise not named the New Orleans Saints will throw major coin in his direction. Jacksonville is a realistic destination for him. Florida is his home state, wife is from Southern FL and the Jags have cap space and in need for a DE. We still have Granderson, Cam J and Davenport though. |

I'm not going to be too upset about losing him. He has had injury problems during his rookie contract and even if the Saints had the cap to re-sign him - I'd be hesitant to give a big contract to a "one-year wonder."
Although, the coaches know if it was just a result of development or a side effect of the DTs and Jordan creating more chances for him to shine. |

I will go on the record with a prediction. 2022 will be many a Saints fan's dream year. should get 10+ compensatory picks.

Re: Saints DE Trey Hendrickson is going to 'be an attractive free agent for anyone,' GM Mickey Loomis says
Trey (Florida Atlantic) took a little longer to develop than Cam Jordan (Cal), though having an 6X ProBowl TE for a father and access to all those veterans is an advantage that can't be understated...
Also, Hendrickson has shared playing time with heavily draft-capital invested Davenport, but Trey has had his share of injuries, more to do with being undersized coming into the league... But a comparison of the first four year production is interesting... Cam Jordan 64 games, 120 Solo Tk, 50 QB Hits, 31 TFL, 29 Sk, 5 FF Trey Hendrickson 45 games, 47 Solo Tk, 43 Qb Hits, 18 TFL, 20 Sk, 3 FFAlso, keep in mind, Trey often lines up against the Left Tackle vs Cam Jordan who's lining up against the Right Tackle, with the exception of Ramczyk, how many elite RTs are in the NFL vs LTs? Cam was paid like an elite DE despite only solid numbers during his rookie contract; Trey compares favorably despite less games, some due to injury, some healthy scratches... One hit wonder? Maybe, but I doubt it. I'd draw more a line to Trey having Nielsen developing him... Don't know who'll we'll be able to afford, but losing both Trey Hendrickson and Marcus Williams will be costly... And I'd seriously consider getting a discount from Cam Jordan who's production took a serious nose dive this season... And I know this, we now have developed an elite DE, and he's in the house, now - so find a way to pay him now or pay another later... Re: Saints DE Trey Hendrickson is going to 'be an attractive free agent for anyone,' GM Mickey Loomis says
Davenport is on a rookie contract, and I'd claim the fifth year option on him as well...
Y'all know I've b*tched ad nauseum about spending two firsts and a fifth rounds picks to move up to get him, but that's not on him but on Sean Payton. But as simply a first round pick, he's been solid; the sack totals are frustrating as getting the QB on the ground is the only way to really shut down the passing attack... But for the cap investment, it'd be unwise to move on from him without significant draft capital in return... |

If we lose him to Free Agency, where do we go from here at the FS position? Draft? Retain PJ services or try to find a baller on a budget in free agency? Kris could have his eye on one of his former players (Seattle/Dallas) too. |
