The Saints have counted on Williams as a starter in the back end of their secondary since they drafted him in the second round of the 2017 draft. His speed and ball skills have made him one of the better playmakers at his position in the NFL. Since 2017, he ranks sixth among NFL safeties with 13 interceptions.

They mentioned earlier today, before the tag, that the Saints were wanting to extend him. The extension with a minimal first year cap hit make total sense. No way we can carry his cap number ($11.196 million) as it stands.

A couple years ago in free agency, elite safeties were going for pennies as teams focused on depth at corner. Teams let Honey Badger walk. Spending a ton of cash on safety who grades well but isn't known for a ton of big plays in big moments seems like a bad bet. He must have copies of whatever pictures passed down from Rick Venturi, Joe Vitt, Andrus Peat, etc.

Well, the tag is of the non-exclusive type, so if another teams signs him, the Saints will get two first round picks...

Likely not to happen for a safety...
