Saints and Jameis Winston reach an agreement on a 1-year deal
1 Attachment(s)
A day after longtime quarterback Drew Brees retired, the New Orleans Saints may have signed his successor.
The Saints and quarterback Jameis Winston agreed to a one-year contract, a league source confirmed. The Athletic first reported the news, and subsequent reports indicated the deal will pay Winston $5.5 million in base salary with potential to earn up to $12 million after hitting incentives. https://bloximages.newyork1.vip.town...=crop%2Cresize Winston essentially confirmed the news himself after the news broke, tweeting: "Who dat!" The Saints announced the transaction late Monday night. more on NOLA https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.esp...3fplatform=amp |
Re: Winston signed
Well, I guess we saw that coming.

Re: Winston signed
I guess we had no competition for his services. Cheap contract. Kind of like the old Billy Joe days, huh?

downfield are about to have their prayers answered. |

Re: Winston signed
I'm no fan of the guy's character. But you have to admit it's a bit exciting considering the physical limitations we've seen in Drew the past 2-3 years. I hope he learned from Drew. If what I'm reading is right, the base salary is 5.5 mil. I'm sure Jameis will do all he can to reach those incentives. You have to wonder if we really do draft a QB early this year.

That stated... I like Winston and believe he is the future. With Payton Winston could turn into a great QB, but the beauty is he only needs to be good and we’ll be fine. |
Re: Winston signed
Overpaid and overrated. He will be the highest paid back up in the league unless we use him as trade bait. Might get a rd 5 since his contract is so cheap. Someone tell him to stay out of the seafood markets and he should stay a viable backup.

Re: Winston signed
I heard a point made today on NFL Network while talking about the Saints QB post Brees. They were discussing Winston. They said that if the Saints signed Winston his expectations would be based upon the value of his contract. If it was greater than Hill's he should be expected to be the starter. If it was less then he should be expected to be the backup.
Hill has a guaranteed total salary with bonuses of $12.159 million this season. Winston has a deal worth "up to" $12 million this season. I seriously hope Winston does play QB because Taysom's value comes as the hybrid player. Either one is a huge step down from what we have had for the past 15 years. |

Will he keep Aaron Brooks' old number? |

A one year deal suits everyone.
If Winston shows he's the guy he get paid next year the real big money. He's bet on himself to succeed and the Saints get to see him without being locked in. |

Re: Winston signed
I’ve always been one who’s looked at the upside of Jameis Winston. Sure he has had his problems early in career as many players have, but he has also accomplished a lot more than most players. 5,000 yard passing season. Career 120-90 TD to Int ratio. Yeah he needs ball control skills, but he also got sacked a lot and had different OCs in his 5 year stint at Tampa IIRC.
The dude is a big, strong, First overall Heisman-winning pick. Only 27 and has never had a serious injury. He’s everything Drew Brees isn’t! Get some production from WRs and Trautman and Payton might be like a kid in a candy store again with his play calling. Let’s put it this way, if Payton can help Winston improve half as much as he helped Brees improve, then they will be set at QB! |
Re: Saints and Jameis Winston reach an agreement on a 1-year deal
I like that this is a one-year prove-it deal and it frees us up to whatever we see fit to do in the draft (no added pressure of picking a QB unless it's the right guy). Do we still have Simien?

Re: Saints and Jameis Winston reach an agreement on a 1-year deal
Sean in the past made Kerry Collins better, made Quincy Carter into a real QB, and had only one loss without Drew in the last two seasons. I'm intrigued on what he will do post Drew. Taysom has skills, and so does Winston. Let the best man win.

I like this deal; low risk, high reward. I hope Winston is our starting QB week 1.

As far as for public opinion, more than one B&G member didn’t want or believe in Drew Brees in 2006. The ONLY things that gives me pause are the fact that his contract is 1 year and no other team in need scooped him up with a cheap multi year contract... I won’t speculate as to why, smarter football people that me are making those decisions I just recognize them as flags. |
Re: Saints and Jameis Winston reach an agreement on a 1-year deal
I hope he earns 5.5 and never sees the field. Complete waste of money.

Did you know Winston is ranked #29 on the top 100 free agent list and the #2 QB on the same list?
Sean Payton is the quarterback wisperer. |

I've thought of Winston as Brooks 2.0 for a while now. That's not a terrible thing. The Saints got their first playoff win with Brooks and Haslett as coach. Payton is a much better coach than Haslett. |
