Saints and Jameis Winston reach an agreement on a 1-year deal

1 Attachment(s)
A day after longtime quarterback Drew Brees retired, the New Orleans Saints may have signed his successor.

The Saints and quarterback Jameis Winston agreed to a one-year contract, a league source confirmed. The Athletic first reported the news, and subsequent reports indicated the deal will pay Winston $5.5 million in base salary with potential to earn up to $12 million after hitting incentives.

Winston essentially confirmed the news himself after the news broke, tweeting: "Who dat!" The Saints announced the transaction late Monday night.

I can see it, even though I know Hill would never beat Winston in an open competition. He’s just so loved.

I don't see either as a viable future. Sure, either can do okay. Both are free next year, as are the Saints. It's wait and see for a year. Hell, the preseason isn't over yet. We can still pick up another via draft.

I believe in Jameis Winston. I believe in his arm talent, football IQ, and work ethic. I believe in him as a leader as well. He might be the most talented QB to ever put on the uniform. Of course, Brees in his prime is the better QB. That’s without question, but Winston has the skill level to really shock the world. Right now, I believe Winston is a better QB than Brees.

I wish I had your confidence. That would be a pleasant surprise. I'm expecting Bobby Hebert, Billy Joe Tolliver, Aaron Brooks.

Gotta love a poster who claims to be positive while flaming others if they say something he doesn’t like cry like a baby when things don’t go his way. Guess your true colors finally came out. It’s obvious you are a Brees fan and not a Saints fan.
You have lost any shred of credibility you had left. Even I have a little optimism about the future and I set the bar pretty low.

I'll be here predicting a 20-0 (17 games this year) season per usual come the season. I'll be pulling my ass off every week for a win. I'll have my living room adorned in Saints' finest on game day. But after hearing the constant schitt that Brees was hit with this season from these fans I'm yet a little peeved.

What the hell. I have been urged to be realistic in my expectations. Well, y'all have me convinced. I've joined your side, Dude! Where do I get my membership card?

I'm no fan of the guy's character. But you have to admit it's a bit exciting considering the physical limitations we've seen in Drew the past 2-3 years. I hope he learned from Drew. If what I'm reading is right, the base salary is 5.5 mil. I'm sure Jameis will do all he can to reach those incentives. You have to wonder if we really do draft a QB early this year.

From a physical talent standpoint there is no question. As far as intelligence and football IQ Winston doesn’t come close. Drew has likely forgotten more about football than Winston knows.

That stated... I like Winston and believe he is the future. With Payton Winston could turn into a great QB, but the beauty is he only needs to be good and we’ll be fine.

Re: Winston signed

Overpaid and overrated. He will be the highest paid back up in the league unless we use him as trade bait. Might get a rd 5 since his contract is so cheap. Someone tell him to stay out of the seafood markets and he should stay a viable backup.

AsylumGuido 03-15-2021 09:59 PM

Re: Winston signed

I heard a point made today on NFL Network while talking about the Saints QB post Brees. They were discussing Winston. They said that if the Saints signed Winston his expectations would be based upon the value of his contract. If it was greater than Hill's he should be expected to be the starter. If it was less then he should be expected to be the backup.

Hill has a guaranteed total salary with bonuses of $12.159 million this season.

Winston has a deal worth "up to" $12 million this season.

I seriously hope Winston does play QB because Taysom's value comes as the hybrid player. Either one is a huge step down from what we have had for the past 15 years.

You gotta remember, when Winston was coming out of college they were comparing his football IQ to Peyton Manning. Mariucci said he was one of the most astute X’s and O’s guys he had ever seen. His Wonderlic was 1 point shy of both Manning and Brees. If you ask me, we got a steal. Keep that pocket clean and we’re going to the ship.

I have been on the same page and liked your analysis rezburna over the years, the exception your position on Brees the past couple of years.. I hope everything you and others have said prasing Winston shows up on the field. Like others have question about judgment and character in the past but if he’s our guy in the huddle I’m pulling for him. I think next season will be a triple e-ticket rollercoaster ride.

A one year deal suits everyone.
If Winston shows he's the guy he get paid next year the real big money. He's bet on himself to succeed and the Saints get to see him without being locked in.

This. Now Payton has a QB that can put the ball anywhere on the field and was said to have a very high football IQ. I am very excited to see what he can do with a full year with Payton working with him. The talent is definitely there and it’s one of the reasons I’m against getting rid of Armstead. Let’s stabilize the line and give Winston a fair shot. This is a win-win for us no matter how you look at it.

Boston Saint 03-15-2021 11:16 PM

Re: Winston signed

I’ve always been one who’s looked at the upside of Jameis Winston. Sure he has had his problems early in career as many players have, but he has also accomplished a lot more than most players. 5,000 yard passing season. Career 120-90 TD to Int ratio. Yeah he needs ball control skills, but he also got sacked a lot and had different OCs in his 5 year stint at Tampa IIRC.

The dude is a big, strong, First overall Heisman-winning pick. Only 27 and has never had a serious injury. He’s everything Drew Brees isn’t! Get some production from WRs and Trautman and Payton might be like a kid in a candy store again with his play calling. Let’s put it this way, if Payton can help Winston improve half as much as he helped Brees improve, then they will be set at QB!

I like that this is a one-year prove-it deal and it frees us up to whatever we see fit to do in the draft (no added pressure of picking a QB unless it's the right guy). Do we still have Simien?

Re: Saints and Jameis Winston reach an agreement on a 1-year deal

Sean in the past made Kerry Collins better, made Quincy Carter into a real QB, and had only one loss without Drew in the last two seasons. I'm intrigued on what he will do post Drew. Taysom has skills, and so does Winston. Let the best man win.

Don't forget Tony Romo. Sean believed in his skill set when Parcells was ready to move on from him.

Turned into a solid NFL QB with good coaching.

I think Payton gave Hill his obligatory shot last year. He owes him nothing. He knows Winston is the guy. Won’t know if he’s a suitable replacement until we see him in action but I’m more optimistic with him at QB than I would be if it were anyone else. We got the best guy we can afford and the fact Winston took another one year deal says a lot.

The pundits are already predicting a record number of one year deals this off-season. We know the cap is going to skyrocket next season based upon the new broadcast rights predictions alone, the question is by how much. Thus the one year deals. It helps us as it gives us the test year with Winston, as well.

I wasn’t either but as I said earlier the fact he was willing to take a one year deal this early in FA tells me he’s humble and is willing to work for it. I get the feeling he’s matured a lot. We will see.

I have a slightly different take, not on Winstons capabilities but on his possible ceiling. I don’t recall anyone suspecting Drew Brees would become why he did while he was with San Diego which changes the formulation for me. Maybe.... just maybe Sean Payton was the factor that put Drew over the top and just maybe he can take Winston there as well?

As far as for public opinion, more than one B&G member didn’t want or believe in Drew Brees in 2006.

The ONLY things that gives me pause are the fact that his contract is 1 year and no other team in need scooped him up with a cheap multi year contract... I won’t speculate as to why, smarter football people that me are making those decisions I just recognize them as flags.

I would say that with the abnormally low cap this year and the expectations for future caps to explode upward based upon all of the broadcast rights projections (could easily double the existing contracts) in the following years, franchises and agents alike are likely hesitant to lock themselves into long term deals at this time. That's why one year deals are going to be more common that ever this off-season. At least that's the opinion of more the one familiar with the inner workings of NFL finances that I have heard over the past few days.

Sean Payton is the quarterback wisperer.

I've thought of Winston as Brooks 2.0 for a while now. That's not a terrible thing. The Saints got their first playoff win with Brooks and Haslett as coach. Payton is a much better coach than Haslett.
