That would be assuming he wanted to sign with the Saints. From what I read several teams showed interest after he cleared waivers, but he wanted to play with Brady in Tampa Bay. The Saints could have claimed him off waivers but would have had to pick up his contract.

Erik McCoy stated in an interview he hopes to be cleared by the Docs so he can play Monday - this would be huge upgrade for this offensive line...

He cleared waivers, if my recollection is accurate, before he signed with Tampon.
But I agree nonetheless that his contract would've been significantly higher.
The point was merely for the battering ram size RB we signed vs how big Fournette is. Hopefully this new kid is worth it.

Yes, he cleared waivers, but Tampa was where he appeared to want to go. The Brady factor.
