I love the draft itself. It's when you find out who your potential new players might be. I'll be glued to the TV watching for each of our picks. What I don't get is the desire to try to make the picks yourself. ie. the mock drafts and such. With a little patience you'll know come draft day.

I'll do mock drafts for fantasy football trying to gauge what others might do because I am the one that is going to be doing the actual drafting when the time comes. I just don't get what is gained from mocking the rookie draft. The only thing I ever see from it is a bunch of fans getting pissed off because real teams didn't pick who the fans wanted them to pick. I'm never disappointed in a draft because I don't set myself up for disappointment.

Can y'all honestly explain to me what is gained by researching all of these college players and then setting your expectations up to be shot down. What is the appeal?

I don't get the agonizing over draft picks either.

OR

(JP.......... er) I mean "fan" who tracks every other player available at the Saints selection slot then BYTCHES for YEARS about how one of those players "SHOULD'A" been drafted by the Saints.

What’s the appeal of bragging about never being wrong about something you don’t participate in ?

What is there to be right or wrong about? What's the appeal? What is it I am missing? I absolutely get the appeal of the actual real draft.

I've asked this in the past but never really got an answer. What's the attraction in trying to figure out who you think your team might pick when you can simply wait and see? I'm looking for serious answers. What is the motivation?

And boasting about never being wrong about draft picks is an attempt at humor.

I don’t get that heavily into it myself. I’ve not put any players forward to draft or done any mocks. It doesn’t seem strange to me though. It could be an extension of being a serious college football fan. I had a friend in Cali (RIP Johnny) that watched every minute of NCAA he could on Saturday (he was single of course) from 9 am to the last west coast game of the day. Funny thing he wasn’t as into Pro ball, but he knew a ton about all the College teams and players. If he had been into pro ball he would have been like JP and others here speculating on the best fits for teams and players. It doesn’t seem any more strange to me than the idea of wanting an NFL game every night to watch.

Thanks for your input, but I guess I need input from someone that is "into it". I'm not much of a college football fan myself. Back when I used to run a bowl pick 'em pool I followed it some, but that's been 15 years or so. These days I only watch if NC State happens to be playing. Other than that I couldn't name five college players during the season.

I don't really expect, however, any true determination of the value of the player picked until at least two or three years down the road. If they prove their worth earlier, great! That's why I see draft grades as totally meaningless. That appears to be the feeling of many so-called experts in the field, as well, even as they give grades as directed.

I, of course, know the importance of the draft to the success of a team. I also know that the speculations of fans has zero impact on that degree of success. But, as I have mentioned before, some of y'all get a kick out of playing the guessing game. It's just not my cup of tea. With no prior expectations I am never disappointed with the draft.

For me, it gives me a chance to know the players that we would like and folks think might be available when we pick. I read all the mocks and the ones that have the most picks get more of my attention so I study them closer. Mock drafts show me what the majority believe is possible so I'm always up for a good comparison and break down of the player and how he may fit the Saints system.

All I know is that you win in the trenches and our first draft picks the last four years have been in the trenches, which is where you win the games.

But couldn't you do the same on the players once they are drafted by the Saints? What is the attraction of wanting to know about tons of players that won't come into play. All your questions could be answered within minutes after the real pick is made via the google machine.
