Jeff Duncan: It's time to make the call. Jameis Winston is the Saints' starting quarterback.

It’s time.

I’ve seen enough.

You’ve seen enough.

And I feel certain Sean Payton and his staff have seen enough.

It’s time to make the call: Jameis Winston will be the New Orleans Saints starting quarterback when they open the regular season against the Green Bay Packers on Sept. 12.

The official announcement, which should come sometime in the next week or two, was rendered a mere formality after Winston’s gonzo performance in the Saints’ 23-21 exhibition win against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Monday night.

Jameis Winston or Taysom Hill? Saints' Sean Payton hopes to name QB starter this week, he tells NBC
Winston delivered a 9-for-10, 126-yard, two-touchdown knockout punch in his ballyhooed competition with Taysom Hill to become Drew Brees’ replacement.

It was about as authoritative a statement as you could make, considering the circumstances. In the hours before kickoff, reports stated that Payton hoped to name a starter before the Saints’ game against the Arizona Cardinals on Saturday. So the Jaguars game would, for all intents and purposes, be the final big opportunity for Winston and Hill to make an impression in the close-contested competition.

And Winston made it easy on everyone.

Two series was all he needed to effectively close the deal. On the sixth play of the Saints’ opening drive, he dropped a 43-yard dime to a heavily covered Marquez Callaway, who beat two Jaguars defenders to make a spectacular diving catch for a touchdown. He capped the next series by lofting a 29-yard strike down the sideline to Callaway for another dramatic score.

He certainly played well. Calloway definitely made a couple of nice plays for him as well. Crazy good catch on that first TD pass.

He put on a show.

We haven't seen those kinds of completions to Idaho in a really long time. To be fair, we've seen shorter throws with tremendous YAC. Those two plays really loosened up the defense, however. :bng:

Remember those videos earlier this summer with Jameis, Juwan, Callaway & Tony Jones Jr working out with the RouteGod down in Tampa ? ...

I'd say every single player has benefited from those sessions. It's carrying over to practice and games.

Bonding, film study and chemistry is so important.

Did I miss some of the ones Taysom did?

Well, we needed someone to step up and claim the job with their performance, and it looks like Jameis has done that.

He is saying and doing all the right things. I am cautiously optimistic about the season.

Taysom decided to do his off season conditioning/training up in Idaho.

I'm not sure if it was in a group setting though. I will say this, having Jameis AND Taysom on the field at the same time is a good thing.

Winston looked great, if he stays humble and Payton keeps telling him to be methodical he will find success.

I hope Hill doesn't lose his steam. That guy would pump the whole team up when he gets rolling and some of the attitude he showed on Monday wasn't great. I am sure he knows, but he needs to play with fire like he has in the past regardless of position.

He is. He's worked hard and earned it. Hill is just a couple steps behind in his decision making. It's obvious he just hasn't played a lot of QB. The Saints can win with him, but they can compete for a title with Winston.

Winston definitely earned the right to capture the number one spot in the QB battle.

He did indeed okay great. If you take the first two games, JW won the job. Looks like hill can stay the Swiss Army knife

Credit on your attitude Voo. Still a game to go. Let’s just hope it works out whatever happens.

He's got a pretty good condom of receivers to throw to, for sure.

Seems clear to me that, much as I like Hill, the job goes to Winston. He's earned it with both his play AND his attitude over the last year +.

His issues have always been in his head more than in his style of play. Definitely pulling for him the kid could be as good as any and better than most.

I’m in the same boat. He outplayed hill and deserves to start. It makes me sick to say it because I’ve disliked him all the way back to college.

Redemption stories are what New Orleans should know/love best.

Winning the job of leading a group of elite athletes is only the beginning.

I can't wait to see how this team, these fans and this city responds!

Payton is still splitting the practice reps. Apparently Payton is giving Hill every opportunity to win or lose the QB battle. Poor fella. He looked deflated on his birthday Monday night and I think that it had an effect on his play under center.

Not having the first string offensive line and receivers didn't help either...

Though I certainly understood sitting Callaway early...

It was the other way around the first game and Winston still looked better. To be honest, neither has looked bad. Both are quite capable of being successful with Payton guiding the ship.

Taysom had the opportunity to win, in my opinion it didn't seem like he took the opportunity as seriously as Jameis did.

Everyone saw the work Winston was putting in, in the offseason, whilst Taysom was off on holidays.

Jameis deserves the starting spot, I just hope that performance wasn't his ceiling and he can maintain consistency.

Just watched replay last night. Winston’s passes looked sharp and so did Taysom’s. One thing Winston stared down his receivers. Worked against Jacksonville but good defenses will be licking their chops.

I agree Winston looks more polished and definitely made the case for the starter, but idk about Hill being on holidays. Word was he slimmed down and was training here in Idaho.

To be fair, the only reason I know that Winston was training was because he put stuff on social media. Maybe Hill doesn't do social media. Idk. I doubt that he didn't take it seriously and thought the job was his to lose. But I could be wrong.

He certainly wasn’t seen out partying. That would have made news.

Winston looked good against the Jags.Winstons throws were good and he went through his called plays. The only thing I wasn't so high on with him was him concentraiting on Calloway a little to much like Brees used to do with Puddin', it worked out fine but I would have liked to see him spread it around more, even if I'm a sucker for the deep ball. Hill his body language said it all. I just couldn't figure out why he didn't scramble, that is one of his strong suits, to be honest he looked confused to a point with no fire in him what so ever, that's not the Hill I've seen. By judging this game alone, Winston without a question was the better qb.

I agree I didn't like Hill's demeaner. Makes me think he's learned he's not going to be the starter and Sean is just playing this out to so teams have to keep practicing for both. Wouldn't surprise me if he waited to the last second week 1 to reveal.
