I suspect Payton knew exactly who the starter was going to be weeks ago, but letting the "competition" play out was for the sake of the team chemistry. The team was seeing what Payton already knew. At the very beginning of training camp coach Charlie Weis stated this on NFL Radio. I think he nailed it.

Brees told Winston “This is your team” at the end of the Buccaneers playoff loss. This was always the plan. There never was a real competition.

It's not like His didn't get his money or something. We'll see how this plays out. Will he stay in NOLA after this year. Will the Saints resign him? Or will he opt to move on for a chance elsewhere? Will the Saints trade him at some point?

If you consider Sean’s offense then this is a foregone conclusion for you. Even if Taysom had edged Winston out, which he didn’t, our offense is exponentially more dynamic with Winston under center and Taysom on the field as well, than it is with just Taysom under center. All day, every day.

Hoping Taysom will return to his cameo role, because I have a feeling we will need the occasional QB power run and specialty plays to thwart the defense on some 3rd/4th down or goal-to-go situations, this year more than ever.

Book is the logical choice for the backup QB spot, between Book and Siemian, Siemian is the only one we can risk clearing waivers and making the practice squad (assuming he is still practice squad eligible). But we will see what this last preseason game brings.
