Report: Saints trading for Texans cornerback Roby

Per NFL source ... Ian Rapoport

If accurate, this is a good move at a position of need. Bradley is suspended week 1, but becomes avaiable after that.

It will be interesting to see what the Saints gave up to acquire him.

PFT source.

Pretty good move. He’s solid.

Roby is a upgrade over Crawley & Trufant .. and I keep repeating myself on Adebo but you don't want him to lose confidence early. Adding another quality vet @ CB was needed and necessary. He makes plays.

Saints front office has been stressing the "need" for a CB all off season so I'm not at all surprised by this move.

Good luck to Roby.

How does he compare to Janoris, other than "solid"? Is he cheaper than him also?

Janoris is probably the better of the two, however Roby is a good corner. Meaning he's good against press man, turning his head and making plays (he's had a few pick 6's in his career) on the ball ... consistently. All "solid" traits from a former 1st rounder. He carries a pretty steep contract but I see a restructure coming.

I guess Kris Richard has seen enough to know how he feels about the CB group opposite Marshon Lattimore.

Sounds like he's more expensive in more ways than one. We still don't know what the Saints traded away.

Awesome. I've been worried about corner. Apparrently the Saints front office was too.

Well, well, well… it was starting to look like they just weren’t going to get a trade done after trying so hard all summer.

Janoris is much more gifted than Roby. Jackrabbit is 32 though, so they might be what and what at this point.

Lattimore, Adebo, Trufant, CJGJ, Crawley (don't laugh, he's looked good lately), and Roby? Seems like we have a lot of CB depth now!

Agreed. I wouldn’t mind seeing some dime packages now.

I’m certain Roby is elated to be gone from Houston.

The Texans are a complete mess of a franchise.

Who got cut to make room for him? Desmond Trufant took Murray's spot.

Nobody yet. He is suspended for week one.

David Culley has his hands full, maybe he can bring some of his Ravens experience and keep the team from bleeding out.

Hope we didn't give up too much; Kevin White was a first round pick - No. 7th pick, in fact...

Roby was an on again, off again starter in DEN, replaced by Tlaib...

In Houston, he was shifted over to the NB, important, but no longer a boundary CB; then again, Houston...

Guess we'll see how the Saints Coaching Staff deploys him and if he's effective; Nick made a great point that the pick will be high because they're eating salary...

Note: For those of you who think the salary cap is hard fast re: trades, bookmark this trade away - you can schlep the numbers...

Depth is impressive now, but with Crawley out and Trufant released by Bears for availability concerns, got a feeling we won't find out much now...

Post Week 1 Game, then Payton is required to disclose and we'll see...

So what you're saying is he's not nearly as good as Janoris. So we've should've kept Janoris for one more year, using a salary restructure as a tool.

The conversion of base salary was part of the deal and from what I am hearing it is costing the Saints multiple picks.

Janoris’s age scares me.

Any veteran with mid to above average skills and healthy, can adjust to scheme and coaching much quicker. This gives our rookie CB time the learn the speed and tempo and develop his film study habits. Good / neccessary move on the front office’s part.

K Major 09-09-2021 12:04 PM

Re: Report: Saints trading for Texans cornerback Roby

If the Saints did in fact give up more than one pick for Roby, that wouldn’t bother me. He’s a GOOD CB that we were lacking at a position of need with the exit of Janoris.

After the Saints were unsuccessful in going up in the draft to select Jaycee Horn, it showed they were serious about the CB position opposite Latt.

The likes of Crawley & PJ aren’t gonna get it done @ the 2 spot.

How does this line of thinking jive with Trufant? He's 30 and over the hill too? Why was he still available and Janoris not available since he signed with another team after we cut him?

Maybe it is the difference in dollars? IDK what Jenkins cost was and what he signed for (too lazy to look up) but it seems like they got two CBs in Trufant and this guy for the price of one in Jenkins. Plus they got younger at the position.

I always liked Roby and I'm gad that we made the trade to get him. If it was a fourth round and maybe a seventh round pick then I'm stoked that we got him. Payton uses his later round picks for ammunition to move up for the player or players he covets. Payton uses the day three picks like they were poker chips.

I was thinking that Kamara is more of a wild card than a poker chip. But I like the way you think.

The Saints are paying 1.8M this season in exchange for a starting corner. And a "true" #2 corner ;).

Giving up a 3rd in exchange for a starting caliber cb is just stealing. No guarantees what you'll get in the third round on draft days.

Having Latt and Roby on those boundaries is a win win for 2021.

That's what my how the Saints Coaches deploy Roby comment was about...

Roby was not a regular in starter in DEN as Aqib Talib was ahead of him on the depth chart...

When he signed with HOU, he was moved to the NCB within a year?!?

So I guess we'll find out if he's a true Outside CB or however the Saints use him...

Suspect Payton spent draft capitol so he could make sure he had CB depth for Week 1 and get that all-important home-field, NFC tie breaker over the Packers...

As in ...

... we are going all in to win now!

People do not believe in us. We have as much overall talent as last year when we went 12-4! We ARE going to the post season.

Well the excuse the Saints don't have the talent has been bullshinski since 2017 - and the roster has only gotten better...

Saints have been all-in since 2018 and on after that 2017 draft haul...

We just gotta find out once the bullets are live if Jameis has truly changed or neaux...

Not sure i like it to be honest.
Its cheap this year, another fairly big salary for next while trying to fill the roster that loses Winston,Armstead,Williams and Lattimore looking like they'll be over the cap already.
