Presidents Speech

After hearing the Presidents speech, Benson would be a totaly idiot to leave LA. There is more money than ever before getting ready to be spent on rebuilding this entire region. Once complete, the Levy system will be much better than before, homes will be much nicer, there will be more opportunity for business, including big businesses. A lot of this will start with a brand new stadium. No doubt the nicest in the history of the NFL. There will be superbowls in NOLA again and the tourism industry will spike up thanks to brand new land base casiones (like it or not) blowing up along the Mississippi Gulf Coast. I hate to say this, because no doubt, we lost a lot and some families lost everything, but the Hurricane from an economic stand point could have been the best thing to ever happen to the Gulf Coast. If Benson leaves, then he'll be the real loser.

not to get too political, but did anyone notice that bush plans to use all this money but not increase taxes? this is going to cost as much as the war in iraq. a few notes on all this:

a) we are going to have a huge deficit, and areas will be cut to fund this. isn't the reason that the levees weren't fixed up before bc the gov didn't want to spend money? what will be neglected now. this is the big issue with money and gov; they always fix one area by hurting another.

b) bush gave a bunch of no bid projects to company's close to his party, most notably haliburton. someone is going to benefit from this alright, and its those who are connected and already wealthy

c) on that same note, he cut some act (i think it was a 1937 act) that protected the wages of lower level workers, like construction workers. so now the rich will get richer and the blue collar workers will be hindered in that cause.

i tell you what, i was sick at the gov response to the initial problems, but i am just as disgusted at the cleanup. i wouldnt let visions of retractable roof stadiums go dancing through your heads just yet. a lot of that money will be lost along the way down adn there will be no extra money for amenities, which in the gov's eyes is a stadium for the saints.

It doesn't matter....New Orleans will be back. It will be back big time. They will fix the levee system and NO will rebuild. Hopefully the Saints and their stadium will be a big part of that rebuild.

Right now no one can say if the Dome is going to be destroyed or not. Bottom line is, they will destroy if only IF it can not be rebuilt. I have a feeling the Dome is going to stay.

Yeah but you have to look at it as an investment. You put money into it and you'll get your money back.

We should not see a cut in state funding for any projects, since the rebuilding process should be federally funded. In addition, the bill for coastal restoration and protection that did not make it through the federal government last year asked for 14 billion over something like 7 years, which will be a drop in the bucket compared to the total funding the gulf coast will see for the rebuilding process. My concern is not whether or not the money will be made available, but if it will be used to secure the entire Gulf Coast, or just the new orleans area. The area between Morgan City and the eastern edge of Barataria Bay are in desperate need of coastal restoration projects to rebuild the wetlands that once protected the northern areas of jefferson, lafourche, terrebonne, st.mary, etc. parishes from storm surge.

hey mayoj why don't we cut spending instead of increasing taxes. they aren't high enough. i need the gov to take more then they already are. they already take like 50-60% when it is all said and done. cut welfare. that would save a substantial amount if it was done nation wide

spkb25,

first of all, i was pointing out how cutting money from various areas can cause situations like not fortifeing levees, crappy public schools, shoddy streets, etc. my point was not a push for taxes, but yes for this kind of spending taxes probably need to be raised.

as far as welfare, you begin an entirely different conversation which would be better left for another message board. if you want to engage in that one, start a thread up and send me a link.

as far as the stadium issue goes, hoping to get a brand new state of the art stadium out of this deal is like having your chevette totalled and thinking you will be able to get a new four runner with the insurance check.

and i was pointing out that spending money on people that do nothing more then reproduce is euqally as fruitless. me posting a post on anything about that is silly. we will never agree. so why even waste my time. not worth it

You are obviously wasting your time, time needed for making money to replace those spent on taxes.

I will say this however: At a point in forming an opinion on this subject knowing that the current scheme will not change, one must make a decision to help some who are worthy while knowing that many not worthy will be helped as well or to help no one at all.

We obviously have chosen differently as is our right.
