Re: Payton to take a year off?

Sean Payton's storied run with the New Orleans Saints is finished.

Payton is stepping down as head coach of the Saints, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported Tuesday.

Payton, 58, leaves the Saints with an overall regular-season record of 152-89 and a postseason mark of 9-8, including one Super Bowl victory and the 2006 AP Coach of the Year award, in 15 seasons.

Rapoport reported Sunday that Payton, who had three years remaining on his contract, had not committed to returning to coach New Orleans after an incredibly difficult and challenging season. Now, the arduous 2021 season will go down as his last with the Saints.

Well then. Thanks for everything you have done Mr. Payton. Sad, but can't be mad because you brought us to the promised land.

Enjoy your rest. Please don't go coach the Cowboys.

Well this is a shock. Thanks coach for all you’ve done for us. I would like Flores as head coach

Worried that some things in Bieniemy's past will keep him from being a candidate.

All of it is over 20 years old, but will be factored in

I'm more than okay with this. Time to move forward. Our plan to continue winning at a high level post-Brees was poorly planned out.

Starting to wonder now if the Saints front office wants to rebuild and SP did not? I mean even with experts working the cap, it is still a big mess. Who knows, we shall see what happens this off-season. Best of luck to Sean!

I can’t believe Payton did this though. I know he’s going to Dallas.

Re: Payton to take a year off?

To say I am surprised is an understatement. But, taking a TV job is far more understandable than circumventing four years remaining on a coaching contract to take a position with another team.

Only when FOX is covering the Cowboys' games. Do you think it is just coincidence that Troy Aikman just left FOX to go to Amazon the day before Payton steps down when FOX has been flirting with Payton for a couple of years?

Wouldn't they have to trade for him in order for that to happen?

If he does he does
That'll be another 1st and a 2nd/3rd minimum.

If he "un retires", expect New Orleans to get serious draft picks. SP is still under contract. IIRC, his deal isn't up until 2026.

Unless he "unretires" back to the Saints. The rumors have been of his "taking a break" from coaching. As you mentioned, he is under contract through the 2026 season so a return would be fairly seamless. A one year interim ala the suspension year perhaps?

That’s a minimum…need 2 1st. See how bad Dallas really wants him.

We are 70 million plus over the cap. Cam Jordan will soon turn 33. Demario Davis is 33. Marcus Williams and Terron Armstead are both free agents. We have no quarterback. Payton saw the writing on the wall and retired.

The going got tough and he ran away like a little...

If everyone was healthy it wouldn't be garbage. Don't forget that factor. What was left AFTER injuries was indeed garbage.

Last year the Saints were 100 million over the cap and his Hall of Fame QB had just retired. Don't see how this situation is any worse.

Sure it is. Now we don't have a head coach either.

It isn't. Nowhere near as bad as last season. They can immediately clear $88 million in convertible cap without cutting any players nor adding any guaranteed money all through base salary and roster bonus conversions.

Sean Payton is done as HC for New Orleans.

When and if he "un retires", he'll want a fresh start elsewhere.

Brace yourself for that.

Payton isn’t coming back to the Saints after a year off lol. That’s delusional. Why would anyone take the head coach job if they knew that was the case?

I hope he does
Simple fact is he is done now with the Saints and i would rather Dallas have a bad start to the season and give up multiple picks to the Saints for his services than him join Amazon/CBS and the Saints get nothing

Re: Payton to take a year off?

Not many teams can say they've had the run of success Payton had. Sure this team had some bad losses, but I look back at a bunch of seasons with fond memories.

One of my favourite moments, 2011 vs Giants. Payton back on the sideline from a broken leg. When Jimmy Graham scored, Payton lifted his crutches to signal TD lol

Thanks for everything SP, that Superbowl and those winning seasons were truly special memories.

Whoa. Ok people, calm down.

“ He saw the writing on the wall and ran like a little b=*&+.”
“Bet he is going to Dallas.”
“Thanks for leaving us with garbage o- line.”

Any fairweather fans here?
Hmmmm.

Me, I was Saints fan when they won A GAME. ONE. One game. 1980 or 81, they won A GAME. They lost the other 15, lol.

Oh boy , the Mora 1980s. Winning seasons . 8-8. 9-7.
Lol.

SeanP is leaving for this year, at least from hc.
He might end up on air commentator or guest commentator somewhere .
He might end up hc AT ANOTHER TEAM in 2023.

Good for him.
The past 15 years have been pretty awesome.

He owes Saints and fans nothing.
I am not surprised by the news.

Real life, real facts.
Saints do not have a qb. Rebuilding years are here.
During SeanP’s years,
Saints got taken way down by Goodell’s excessive punishment that year.
Refs threw the NFC game to the L.A.Rams .
Two great years his hard work , and the teams’ was really taken away.
One potential SB repeat year
A NFC conference win, no to refs clearly missed call.

The guy gave a good press conference. Honest. From the bits I saw. I am glad he did it now rather way in the Spring. Obviously, this is something he thought about over the past few months, this whole season.

Best to him.

We will hear more as time goes by. Hopefully he kept the team informed of where he was mentally - sounds like he did. Frankly I'm already excited, not that he's gone, but to see how the roster is shaken, which it clearly needs imo.

I'm sure our beloved neighbors down here in the Division aren't shedding a tear.
Drew goes than Sean goes, it's the gifts that keep on giving.

Oh well next chapter.. because unlike Drew and Sean we can't leave.
We will always be here and we've always been here.
But please no more Ditka's or Haslett's. Lord knows haven't we suffered enough.
