There's a little ambiguity about Payton's contract. He signed a five year extension in 2019 on his contract which was set to expire at the end of 2021.

These are the terms that Triplett and Duncan have been referring to all along through this. Rapaport is the only one mentioning 2024 as the end date and he based it on spotrac.com which doesn't record contract details for coaches in depth as they do players.

If the Cowboys want Payton and I'm GM, it's going to cost them Lamb, Diggs and a 2nd round pick at a bare minimum.

Just give us the two first round picks (Payton hasn't been that great with them anyways); and let's get that offensive line rebuilt and an affordable WRz...
