2022 New Orleans Saints: Training Camp

It doesn't look like we will be using the tight ends much. That's probably a good thing considering our in-house options don't have much to offer. We need to draft a tight end next year. Trautman can't separate himself from defenders and that is a serious limitation that I'm a little worried about.

Don't forget that we have a new TE named Taysom Hill this season. :D

TE Krull will surprise, IMHO.

I'm not ruling him out just yet. He's got good speed, doesn't shy away from contact, willing blocker, if he can catch, with some designed plays, he might be a TE afterall.

Re: 2022 New Orleans Saints: Training Camp

Know lots of folks are frustrated with Trautman, considering four picks (R4, R5, R6, R7) were used to move up in the draft to Round 3 to select the Dayton Flyer...

Like the reach for Marcus Davenport, that's not on Trautman, but on those who didn't factor in their calculus he's coming from Dayton, an FCS school without FBS school resources...

No doubt the low Rec are a legit concern, but the guy has been a tremendous get as a blocker, and despite injury, he's putting forward tremendous effort, so that's a plus...

I'm very optimistic about a third season breakout happening for the former Dayton Flyer, if he can just get enough reliable targets to build confidence, get rolling along...

His blocking is atrocious. Seems to have the build and passion but IMO, he's a few years away from being impactful.

So he’s Jimmy Graham 2.0…

Taysom had a very delicate surgery earlier this year and the rehab will be slow.

Do you have info on his return status that many of us aren't aware of?

Just what Jeff Duncan reported back in January via CBS Sports.

"Hill is expected to need six -to-nine months of recovery following surgery to repair a Lisfranc injury in his left foot, Jeff Duncan of NOLA.com reports."

That could put his return anywhere from sometime next month to near the beginning of the regular season.

I think Vannett will be gone and we will see a trio of Trautman, Johnson, and Krull. Once Hill comes back, one of those guys will probably have to hit the bricks. I'm hoping Krull gets coached up on blocking and becomes a diamond in the rough.

I am looking forward to a healthy Hill on the field. However, I don’t see him ever evening a true TE that can play off the line as a blocker and be a receiving threat. He’s only 6’ 2”. He doesn’t have the height or bulk of a Trautman, Krull, or Kelce.

I think he'll be a "TE" in name only. Fully expect him to be utilized all over the formation.

Re: 2022 New Orleans Saints: Training Camp

I just hope Pete uses him right. PC has a lot of speed already at WR with assuming MT is good. Adding Hill (who has speed) with the WR corp I could see him lining up as a TE. I'm not sold on the O line ,yet. Rookie LT, Ruiz as G. Running back is still a question, Kamara,( everyone knows there) but I will say he's no 3 down back. Rookie rb who I got my fingers crossed on him( just the right size in my opinion) but no real depth to speak of after that. So unless the O line gets it right rb,qb ,wr, TE want matter, the D will have to bail them out for however long.

Agreed. That’s why I feel more “traditional” TE help us needed than Hill provides. Not that it’s readily available

Is Josh Hill still a Lion? Wiki only said signed by Lions and went on IR last year. Helluva blocker and underrated as a receiver (IMHO)

He retired from football about a year ago.

TE Josh Hill retires from football less than 2 months after signing with Detroit Lions

METAIRIE, La. -- Tight end Josh Hill officially announced his retirement Thursday, less than two months after joining the Detroit Lions as a free agent.

The Lions signed veteran tight end Darren Fells as a replacement.

Hill, who turns 31 later this month, spent his first eight years with the New Orleans Saints before being released in a wave of salary-cap cuts. He initially planned to follow his former position coach, Dan Campbell, to Detroit before the apparent change of heart.

Hill's one-year deal with the Lions was scheduled to pay him $1.2 million.

"This game has blessed my family and I with more than we could have ever imagined," Hill wrote in an Instagram post. "Everything this game has given and taught me makes this decision extremely difficult, but I am looking forward to all of the years I have with my young family, and being able to chase after different dreams."

I think that Trautman is the same player as Josh Hill.

Too bad. I wonder if he might change his mind for a team NOT Detroit...

Hill was underrated for his athleticism which was underutilized because of the TE1 (Jimmy Graham) ahead of him; Payton failed to expand his opportunities as he blocked so well...

But Trautman is a better athlete who just came from an FCS school, Dayton (OH) Flyers, that doesn't have the resources that an FBS school like Iowa, Miami (FL), or Penn St has...

Nah, better hands. I know we didn't throw him a lot of balls but I also don't remember him dropping much that came his way. Go back and look at Kamara's early highlight reel you could easily say it's also Hill's highlight as you see him constantly steamrolling people out of AK's way. If he's in shape I'd take him back in a heartbeat he's only 32.

Exciting times. Like to hear Elliss getting some props there too.

I look at the WR position...MT, Landry, Olave and Callaway. If everyone is healthy...that's a good looking group. Kind of a matchup nightmare. If the OL is solid, it could be a big year for the RBs too. Just too many people to cover.

Still need the TE group to come through, IMHO.

Sorensen aka Bob Holly needs to be special teams only. Even if someone gets hurt god forbid. I’d rather them throw Smoke out there instead. Side note man, Smoke Monday is a catchy name. Sometimes I’ll just say it for no reason, lol.
