So, exactly what kind of "performance" are you looking for?

About the only thing more I can ask for is yardage/first down production from him and the receiving/TE group to keep
the chains moving and spell Kamara. Under 200 yards passing/game (which is what he averaged) isn’t gonna cut it in the long run. But, as you point out, the WRs were sub par last year (not
to mention TEs).

Don't forget that only one offensive lineman played every game, as well.

Payton was also being very conservative passing. It was obvious he didn’t completely trust Winston early in the season and wanted to bring him in slow. I think he was about to let Winston loose when Winston got hurt. I feel like what WE saw last year really wasn’t a true sample of what to expect from him going forward.
After seeing him play I still had the same questions as I did in preseason. Great potential and I like the guy, hope he’s able to put it together.

I said in another thread, those stats aren’t as telling as they look. 200 yards a game won’t cut it long term. Payton had him on a short leash and we never got to see him in a situation where he had to play from behind. At some point during the season our defense is going to have a bad game. I want to see how he handles playing in spite of his supporting cast.
He’s not going to do exactly what he did last year, he’s a competitor and isn’t going to spend the season playing it safe. Even if he does there’s gonna games where he’s forced to have to take chances.
I like the guy and think he can do it but I’m not 100% sold.
Don’t put words in my mouth with that Super Bowl bull****.

We're going into year 3 with the continued "I just don't know if this is the guy." I just cannot see why people are not satisfied with the production that they saw last year. Why is it not enough to see that the Saints won 5 of the 7 games that Winston started, then proceeded to lose the next 5 games in a row without him.

What I saw of Winston that I liked last year was rooted in that conservatism. Specifically on 3rd down, taking off and running for the 1st down instead of trying to force the ball down the field.

I learned a long time ago in the Payton/Brees/Carmichael offense that once passing attempts got above about 30-35 in a game, that's when the offense got into trouble. So, if Winston remains conservative both in yards and attempts, that would just be fine with me. We have a top 5 defense. All the offense needs to do is not screw it up and turn the ball over. Winston was right on the money with that in 2021.

Trying to pressure Winston to be more than he needs to be is exactly what is going to lead to non-productive play. We don't have the defense that will lead to 52-49 final scores like back in the Brees days.

Asking for a lot more is a dangerous request.

Some of us remember watching those games last year. We didn’t win because of Winston. Sometimes it was in spite of his decisions. Give us 9 or ten games in a row with MOSTLY good decisions- especially in critical situations and I’ll admit he has improved.

All speculation until actual performance on the field this season, limited positive showing last season. Just like Thomas, let's see how the season progresses for Jameis. I am a fan, but also a realist. At this point, I only have my own thoughts, which don't mean diddly.

Asylum can put up positive quotes, not original(all Tweets) from fellow teammates all day long, not sure what that proves. Realistically, what are his teammates going to say, our starting QB sucks, we don't stand a snowballs chance in hell? The only time I have seen Saints teammates turn on one of their own, was a couple of seasons ago when they publicly criticized Brees.

Last season Jameis did appear to show restraint. There were times you could actually see him look down field and pump and catch himself from making a bad pass. He has tons of athleticism and determination, but his decision making at times is an entirely different story.

I hope to really be able to sing his praises as the year progresses. Nothing would make me happier!
