I said in another thread, those stats aren’t as telling as they look. 200 yards a game won’t cut it long term. Payton had him on a short leash and we never got to see him in a situation where he had to play from behind. At some point during the season our defense is going to have a bad game. I want to see how he handles playing in spite of his supporting cast. He’s not going to do exactly what he did last year, he’s a competitor and isn’t going to spend the season playing it safe. Even if he does there’s gonna games where he’s forced to have to take chances. I like the guy and think he can do it but I’m not 100% sold. Don’t put words in my mouth with that Super Bowl bull****. |

What I saw of Winston that I liked last year was rooted in that conservatism. Specifically on 3rd down, taking off and running for the 1st down instead of trying to force the ball down the field. I learned a long time ago in the Payton/Brees/Carmichael offense that once passing attempts got above about 30-35 in a game, that's when the offense got into trouble. So, if Winston remains conservative both in yards and attempts, that would just be fine with me. We have a top 5 defense. All the offense needs to do is not screw it up and turn the ball over. Winston was right on the money with that in 2021. Trying to pressure Winston to be more than he needs to be is exactly what is going to lead to non-productive play. We don't have the defense that will lead to 52-49 final scores like back in the Brees days. Asking for a lot more is a dangerous request. SFIAH |
Super Bowl Championships: New Orleans Saints:1, Carolina:0, Atlanta Chokers: STILL ZERO
Only Atlanta choked in an unchokable situation... Life is definitely good. |
