Re: Ian Book headed to Philly also
I guess we are about to see if Coach Peyton is a true QB Whisper. After signing Brees the synergy between those two was a major reason for the Saints success.
History to this point has not shown that Coach Peyton has able to recruit, develop or be successful with drafting or other NFL QB’s career reclamation projects much beyond Drew. Drew’s high football IQ, under appreciated athleticism and durability, dedication to film study, preparation, his pre-snap recognition of defenses allowed him to a win often before the ball was snapped. His processing speed identifying miss matches, processing route progressions coupled with his accuracy elevated all the players around him. We can only imagine what could have been during Drew’s career and 5000+ yard seasons had Coach Peyton and staff put together just a mid tier or better defense. After Allen took over as Defensive Coordinator in late 2016 along with Jeff Ireland scouting and drafting more attention was paid to improving the defensive units. Is fair to question whether Allen’s improving defense was the unit responsible for holding the team together thru Drew’s thumb injury missing 6 games in 2019 and his final year in 2020. Was Coach Peyton’s cast of revolving QB’s an attempt to recreate his successes with Drew that never made any real impact. Game management game planning with a really good Dennis Allen defense was only thing between mediocrity and 3-13 seasons. I thank Coach Petyon for his time and contribution to the organization, wish him well and think he will improve the Denver Organiztion. For a coach to have coached a generational talent like Brees, Brady or a Manning, recent history shows that coaches fortunes change rapidly when the generational QB’s retire or move on. Dennis Allen’s defense was the unit that allowed the Saints to be even remotely competitive and further bolstered Coach Peyton’s reputation. The next couple of years with Denver will tell us much about Coach Peyton and Drew’s years together in New Orleans. |
