We didn't give up our 23 1st for him. Go back and check. We gave it for Trevor. Trading up to get him was the right thing to do. He's the guy I wanted, and I couldn't be happier. We also got a starting LT.

Olave IS a good player. He has the potential to be great. Our QB situation is what it is. Not much more we could do in the offseason. We tried to get Watson. Very happy that didn't happen.

It's technically impossible to differentiate which 2022 1st round pick we gave up our 2023 1st round pick for. We had the 18th pick in 2022. We bundled it with our 2023 1st round pick and many other picks to get the 16th and 19th picks in the 2022 1st round from the Eagles. Then we traded additional picks to Washington to move up the 16th pick to the 11th for Olave. Had we not traded at all, we certainly could have taken Panning 18th instead of 19th. But had we not asked the Eagles for two first round picks, we certainly could have moved up from 18th to 16th without given up a future first rounder, or just moved up from 18th to 11th with Washington for slightly more than the cost of moving up from 16th to 11th, but much less than the cost of getting two first round picks.

The trade with Philadelphia was neccessary to avoid having to choose between Olave and Panning. It was not neccessary to get Panning. That would have taken some trading up but not our 2023 1st.

Having a good or great wide receiver is nice, but wide receiver is not the most important position. If we we end up giving up a top 5 pick in 2023 to avoid choosing between Olave and Panning in 2022 that will be bad for us. T Falcons tried building around a WR by selling the farm to trade up for Julio Jones. Andre Johnson and Calvin Johnson never got a ring. Larry Fitzgerald never did either. Or Randy Moss. The Cowboys, Bengals, and Vikings have been all about their wide receivers and haven't got a ring from one since the early 90's. So we could have got Olave without trading next years 1st, but if you feel that would have been too big a risk and trading next years first was neccessary to assure getting Olave, you are valuing the wide receiver position too much, and we should never risk winning the QB lottery with a future pick that could be top 5 to get a mid round wide receiver, even if the are the next Randy Moss or Jerry Rice.

We may not have a first round pick next year because of the trades to get getting Penning and Olave who are keystones for our future building blocks. Fortunately, it looks like Payton wants to coach again and we should have enough ammo to move up and pick the face of the franchise going forward.

Why would Payton want to go to a team that just traded away multiple high picks for him? That's the conundrum that baffles me. He'd be better off returning to the Saints. Not saying that would happen, however.
