Michael Thomas to IR

Per Nick Underhill.

I remember getting roasted a few weeks back for even mentioning this from one poster here .

As I stated before, turf toe is no joke.

Oh well.

Now we gotta read about how he’s faking it and is a cancer to the team.

He got paid for four straight 1,000 yards seasons and a host of TD’s.

Well damn.

I'd like to say this again... we need a complete overhaul of our strength and conditioning program. We need to modernize the way we train our players, how we handle their nutrition, etc.

I'm sure every team goes through their up and downs with injuries but man... it's been a re-occuring theme year after year with us.

Doesn't sound all that good for Marshon either.

At least for the upcoming game vs the Ravens that is.

So if he gets healthy, his next contract should reflect his lack of availability during this contract.

I'm not doubting he is hurt or his desire. I am just trying to understand how he got this hurt from being rolled up the back of his ankle at the end of the Tampa game 3 years ago? Is it different legs/feet or the same one over and over?

More disappointed we lost a dynamic weapon. The whole damn saga is frustrating.

It would be my guess that Thomas had input on the decisions surrounding his toe just like he had input on his ankle surgery last time. BOTH the Saints medical staff AND Thomas come off looking bad on this.

It's probably just me but damn our Oschner Sports Medical staff just gives me bad vibes.

Same could be said for the Pelicans. Injury after injury after injury x-(

Oschner were also the ones that misdiagnosed Delvin Breaux, and said his leg wasn't broken when it was.

As you say, bad vibes.

I’m disappointed that Mike’s season is probably over. But I feel worse for the player. From the outside looking in, I know CGM has to be hurting. He wants to compete and prove his doubters wrong. He wants to be mentioned amongst the best to ever play his position. Imagine going from a top 3 receiver in the league to potentially starting from scratch.
I feel his pain.

I wish Victor Cruz and Michael Thomas the best of luck on the golf course in the future. I am sure they would both love to contribute to our team in 2023. They seem like great people. Realistically Victor would be cheaper than Mike and I expect their 2023 contributions will be similar so if I had to choose I would go with Victor. He wants to prove his doubters wrong and the talent is all there.

The comment would hit a little harder if Victor Cruz wasn’t 35. OBJ would be the better comparison.

Brees got him paid and he quit. Hopefully he won't be a Saint in 2023. Olave, Callaway and Shaheen don't need his cancer in the room.

I hate it for the team. As someone said earlier, Turf Toe is no joke! At least he's getting surgery NOW. i sincerely hope he gets better. I also sincerely hope that Loomis is looking to cut bait and starts shopping for buyers. We need a Beast, not a Glass Tiger. If he can't stay healthy, then he's no good to us.

Sadly, I'm out of patience and seriously done with Thomas.

Rez, even a dope would acknowledge that you don't go under the knife, just to 'fake it'. But I hear you. The hate runs deep in some of our fans.

They should get it from Payton since he had MT in there blocking when he shouldn't have in the 4th qtr with the game in hand. Just dumb.

Good luck with that. It doesn't make sense to cut or trade him from my understanding.

Ugh. Well…at least the wait is officially over. No more sitting around waiting to see if he comes back. Good grief. I’m just over it at this point. Put him on IR and let’s not mention his effing name the rest of the season. Glad I didn’t pay him. Lol.

Base salaries of $15MM and $18MM in the next two years. I'd certainly say so.

Plus he'll be 30 in March.

For context, similarly talented WRs who've also suffered multiple injuries:

Julio Jones is 33 and just about dead.

AJ Green, 34 and nothing left to contribute.

Re: Michael Thomas to IR

It seems like whatever injury Thomas has, you multiply the normal recovery time by 8.

My wife might suggest it's the #13 bringing him this bad luck. At this point, none of us should refute that.

Who though?

A team looking for a WR would need one that plays.

he hasn't lived up to his contract by no means, looked great up to that point but nada after signing it. If traded we're getting nothing if anything for him and keeping him here and paying for no return sux also. I think the Saints are stuck with a walking accident prone wr that can't stay healthy, I could care less if it's his fault or not, he's not contributed in how many games? in how many years? That don't cut the mustard in my book, potential or not.

I think we could get Matt Ryan or Carson Wentz for him, but suffice it to say I would rather cut him. He is not worth his salary because at least 9 times out of 10 a player who is hurt 40 of 50 games over 3 years will never come back and be consistently healthy again, perhaps even 99 out of 100 times, its hard to think of even one player coming back while its easy to think of dozens who didnt. So he is not worth his salary unless he is worth 10x his salary if healthy, and he is not worth $150+ million per year healthy. So he is a logical post june 1 cut unless one is living in total denial.

People keep posting this when it's patently not true. 2019 with 149 catches and 1725 yards, an all-Pro season, and Offensive Player of the Year came after signing the contract.

While it's true that the guy has been hurt, and that a lack of communication between the player and team in the 2021 offseason caused a delay in his return, to say that he's done nada since signing the contract is just bunk.'

Papz I'm in the "football shape" camp that believes you have to play football to get into football shape. I know the league has cut a lot of contact out in the off and preseason due to risk of injury but it looks like all they did was Loomis injuries into the regular season. There is a level of muscle, joint, and tendon conditioning that only comes from full speed impact.

I agree with that. We only can control what we can but it still wouldn't hurt to try to optimize training the best we can, when we can.

I always wondered why more sports teams don't implement more yoga into their regimen. Maybe they do and it's not publicized but one would think it would pay some dividends.

Man I jammed my toe about 3 weeks ago and not only is it still purple, it hurts as hell. I for one will not rag on Thomas' turf toe. Sucks he's constantly hurt. He was on track of becoming a Hall of Famer.

Well, most of us knew that this was a strong possibility. It's too bad for can't call Mike. However, I wish him well and hope he can suit up for the Saints again. It's too bad that we can't trade him for a player that can get on the field. But it is what it is.
