Carolina to Waive Baker Mayfield Today - Should We?

Just head that Carolina is going to release Baker Mayfield later today. Given our current record we will be way up there on the waiver priority list and would have a good shot at claiming him.

Should we?

We could easily cover the remainder of his base salary for 2022.

$4,858,000 / 17 * 5 = $1.4288 million.

Ask yourself, is Baker an UPGRADE over what we have in the room now?

I mean the guy had a good O line, OBJ, Landry, and Chubb yet he still couldn't do much up in Cleveland.

Baker is a hard pass for me.

I agree. I'd much rather have Winston out there.

He might/should not get past Houston given the state of their QB play.

I'd rather take Jason David on as QB.

Trade "crab legs" to the forty whiners

Re: Carolina to Waive Baker Mayfield Today - Should We?

Yes we should make a similar move. Carolina looked at their current record and even though cutting Mayfield might incur some cap hit they decided it was best to plan for the future and take the cap hit now rather than offering Mayfield a long term extension with a $50 million salary in 2026 to save cash now. We have the same record as Carolina and should be willing to put Michael Thomas, Tyrann Mathieu, Jameis Winston, Jarvis Landry, Andrus Peat, and/or Taysom Hill on the waiver wire in the interests of the long term.

Yes we should...
Shaheed can catch the ball from Mayfield.

Besides we don't have the luxury of not trying.

And crab legs still has a fractured back. And an injured foot that needs surgery.

If guys like Sean Payton or Joe Lombardi were still in the building, sure.

But they ain't.

Coaching matters.

When he came out of college I thought Mayfield would be really good. He seemed a good player and leader but now he has flamed out in two different places, that makes you wonder.

Coaching matters... he'd do better here. Plus as posted earlier, it'd piss off the Whiners. :biggun:

It might piss off Baker too ... he probably requested to be waived at this time to try to be a part of a playoff contender, especially San Fran.

He is better, imo, than anyone we have on our roster. How could it hurt?

We are a contender to appear in the playoffs in the sense that Qatar appeared in the world cup. I think we are less likely to win it all than Qatar was. But Mickey Loomis is willing to spend as much as Qatar to make it happen.

I've never been a fan of Jameis, but he's much better than Baker.

Absolutely nothing to gain by signing Mayfield at this point. Not enough season left to see if he has any value for 2023. With that said, I am sure his price and market will be limited, no issue with giving him a chance to compete next year in training camp.

You need a pacifier or maybe a tit to appease the crying.
