Payton's landing somewhere as head coach is going to be more of a problematic move than some anticipate. All three parties have to be on the same page.

1) The possible acquiring franchise must be completely open to trading a great deal of capital solely for the rights of Payton;

2) Payton must be seeing that franchise as being at the very least an acceptable location to land;

3) and the Saints must be willing to accept the location AND the capital being offered.

If any of those are not in place Payton will be back on the boob tube next season.

However, the final location with the least resistance would be to New Orleans as two of the three roadblocks would be non-existent.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Sunday the team feels Payton "is worth what other great coaches have been valued at and then some."

Schefter noted the Oakland Raiders got two first-round picks, two second-rounders and $8 million from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in return for Jon Gruden in 2002. Draft compensation, including a first-rounder, was also attached to Bill Belichick's hiring by the New England Patriots in 2000 and Bill Parcells' arrival with the New York Jets three years earlier.

Jonathan Jones of CBSSports.com canvassed a few team executives and got a range of responses as to Payton's value in a swap.

One said a first-rounder is "unrealistic in my opinion," and another said they'd request a first-round pick but accept second- and fourth-rounders. However, one executive pointed to the Gruden deal as the bar for their demands.

Payton is the most prized target in the NFL coaching market. He had a 152-89 record in his 15 years with the Saints, leading the franchise to its first Super Bowl victory in 2009.



Finally some common sense on trade value. C'mon 'Zona. Bring that top 5 pick and then some.

Don't be surprised if Sean Payton returns next year rather than this year. The teams he has the most interest in are winning down the stretch. I think he would rather wait another year instead of limiting himself to one of the franchises currently in the market. Arizona and Houston are still good possibilities though in my opinion.

If Payton is putting a staff together right now then there's likely no waiting until next year. Why get a staff together now when many of those coaches will likely be picked by other teams in this next offseason?

It's basically just speculation that he's "putting together a staff". The article claims a "league source" as the source. There's no indication that he has actually made any serious inquiries with anyone to be a part of a staff. Not saying it won't happen, but at this point it's nothing more than speculation.

He is more likely to wait a year to stop a team giving too much away in draft capital. Give it a month and you'll start hearing how he is willing to wait a year for them reasons. I'm not sure why so many seem happy to overlook his part in the mess this team is in. Its wasn't just Loomis giving out and extending these deals to older veterans for one more shot. The amount of dead money flushed down the hole in cap space each year to do this has stopped the team from getting players that could have made a difference or clearing certain players off the roster. The lack of cap space has is what has effectively meant trading a backfield of CjGJ/Williams to Maye/Mathieu, swapping two players headed into their primes for two aging vets.CJ on his own has 1 more interception than the Saints have throughout the team in only 11 games. And Marcus Williams has one less than the Saints total in 9 games

Williams and Gardner-Johnson are not with other teams because of lack of cap space. They are elsewhere because what they were demanding was not what the Saints were willing to pay. Big difference. Add to that the fact that Gardner-Johnson had become a major distraction and was refusing to practice. He's now doing his best Michael Thomas imitation on the Eagles IR.
