Our medical staff sent him back on the field too early and he reinjured himself. I don't blame him for not returning calls from the medical staff. He should be far enough removed from his injury that all the trainers have to do is build up his strength and rehab him. I don't trust the medical staff either. I've watched them misdiagnose injuries and rush players back, so I don't trust them.

Foster Moreau may have a different opinion though.

And refresh my memory (because I seriously don't remember) but who else was misdiagnosed and rushed back to the field before being properly rehabbed?

Like Guido pointed out earlier they were unrelated injuries that got him last year. He came back playing hard and didn't reinjure himself. Instead, he hurt himself with a new injury. And that is somewhat disconcerting because he's older now and it's quite possible that he develops another nagging injury when he returns from rehab. He was rushed back too quickly after his initial diagnoses years ago and his likely HOF career was derailed by injury. Which, is why he didn't want to talk to the medical staff last year.

Delvin Breaux was the player I was referring to that had been misdiagnosed and sued the team. He had a promising career and I feel like the Saints medical staff cost him his NFL career. Why do players go on IR after four weeks of rehabbing an injury? There were several bad calls last year alone on whether to place a player on IR or rehab him. There have been countless numbers of times that the medical staff has underperformed throughout recent history. Most recently, I think about Winston's back and the troubles with diagnosing whether he was healthy enough or not to play.

I used to sell medical equipment to Ochsner. They are absolutely filthy! It's no wonder Mercer runs rampant through their facility. Saints players miss way too much time each year due to injury. I'm sure it's the medical staffs fault somehow. Honestly, I don't think MT has faith in the medical staff either.

To be fair, part of the hesitancy of placing a player on IR now is because of the newer rules allowing recall to the active roster. There's a limit to how many can be recalled. With as many injuries as the Saints had to deal with last year they had to juggle who they did and didn't place on the list. If there was a chance of them returning in fewer than the mandatory period it would behoove them to save that spot for another player. The problem with that is that it isn't foolproof. In some cases recover earlier than estimated and in others it is longer.

Re: Michael Thomas agrees to restructured contract

Blaming an external factor for why something was anomalous is problematic if that external factor is still present going forward. Our record was bad last year because of bad calls. Michael Thomas was unavailable because of bad doctors. Guess what, we have the same refs and doctors next year. And the refs are mad we complained. And the bad doctors have to be relied on both for the quality of their previous work on existing injuries on players who have already been injured and for the quality of their future work on players who have not been injured yet. They did great diagnosing a cancer with Moreau, and probably if a player got pregnant they would be the only team in the league to catch it, but the specialty where our medical staff really struggles is sports medicine. I wish we could fire the refs. We could fire the doctors. But we didn't. And so, expect the same results, and factor that into all predictions. We can debate all day whether any of this is Michael Thomas' fault or all the medical staffs, but regardless he is like a Formula One race car that has been fully disassembled and reassembled by Tim Allen's character from Home Improvement. I would not bet on everything holding together regardless of whose fault it is. There is just not a precedent for coming back effectively from missing 40 of 50 games due to a series of injures, even under the guidance of doctors who are good at sports medicine, much less under our doctors.

Ochsner’s was once a very well regarded Medical Group … expansion and large corporate practices have reduced the delivery to a bottom line driven process. I think this corporate philosophy has cause a talent drain due to conflict between front line health care professional and the management.

Similar results are seen over a wide range of organizations that go through similar transformations.
