Regardless, unless we know the totality of he offer as well as the franchise's plans it's an assumption.

Exactly. At this point nothing is more than assumption other than what is written in stone like current roster and available draft picks.

That's the point that many are totally missing. Payton makes the decision, not the Saints. Payton doesn't go to who offers the Saints the best deal, he goes to who offers HIM the best deal.

In fact, trading away draft capital would make the destination less attractive to Payton who would surely be expecting to play a major role in the draft process wherever he lands.
We own his rights and don't have to trade him anywhere. They're intially bidding to Payton, but they're also bidding to the Saints. You are mistaken if you think Payton holds all the cards. Payton may make the initial decision, but it will all boil down to what the two teams can agree two. We're not obligated to settle for anything and nor should we.

That is exactly right. The Saints don't HAVE to settle for anything. They can choose to get nothing instead. However, if they want more than nothing they are limited to the most that the other team is willing to offer. As I have pointed out several times, the only card that the Saints hold is the veto card. They have the ability to say Payton goes nowhere.

I agree. The only thing I’m worried about is the Saints backing down a little for Sean because of what he’s done for this organization. I hope they hold their ground

The Saints hold more than a veto card, they have the upper hand. The Saints are in a position to openly auction his rights to any team that will bid and they can decide to narrow Sean's pool if they choose to. The Saints have the power to way "we don't care who you want, you get to chose from only AFC teams". If Sean doesn't like that, he has to wait it out.

Furthermore, if they choose not to trade him they are not getting nothing. Sitting on Sean Payton for a year delays any exodus of coaches that might leave to follow him. Delays any players that enter free-agency from being available to him. Delays facing him in regular season or playoffs. Delays a lot of press drama. They get a lot of peace of mind. :bng:
