Once again, here's how Nick Underhill explains it.

There's also a decent chance that Payton decides he doesn't want any of the openings. In an interview a few days back he said, "Everyone’s asking about that city, or quarterback. I think it’s more about ownership and front office. There’s no utopia — all these teams, they’re all moving on for reasons. And some of them, you’ve got to be careful that it’s not just the coach, that there are problems that run deeper. For me, it would be ownership and front office."

When asked about his odds of returning to the FOX studio in 2023 on a scale of one to ten, Payton responded “Seven,” with a straight face. So he’s more likely to stay in the studio than return to a sideline. That might be hard to believe, and it’s probably a leverage play to help him (and maybe the Saints) out in negotiations, but it goes to show that he has enjoyed a turn in the media as much as he expected.

Furthermore, if they choose not to trade him they are not getting nothing. Sitting on Sean Payton for a year delays any exodus of coaches that might leave to follow him. Delays any players that enter free-agency from being available to him. Delays facing him in regular season or playoffs. Delays a lot of press drama. They get a lot of peace of mind.
No offense, but this is some serious wishful thinking. As I’ve said before, some of you are going to be sorely disappointed.

Couldn't agree more, shawnky.

And don’t get me wrong, I’d more than love for it to play out like some of are expecting and will gladly eat crow if it does. I’m just not prone to wearing rose colored glasses…..that is all.

As our esteemed site owner said himself earlier in this thread.

There goes the Texans for sure.

Same here, shawnky. I'd absolutely love it if we made a killing in draft capital and I live in rose colored glasses, but the Saints do not have the leverage that some people believe in this case. I can already see the posts slamming the Saints for accepting "too little" for Payton's rights.

What part of what I said is a wish? Read it carefully, there is no optimism or pessimism, just an outlay of options and consequences.

And nothing of fact which is wishful thinking on your part.
