The thing is though, if you're writing those checks to players who are no longer on the team then how do you afford to bring in new players?

Cam Jordan, Lattimore, and Demario Davis should be among the next wave.

The New Orleans Saints took a couple of important steps towards reaching salary cap compliance on Thursday, restructuring their deal with standout right tackle Ryan Ramczyk while agreeing to bring back struggling kicker Wil Lutz on a pay cut. These two moves saved a combined $11.8 million in salary cap space, leaving New Orleans over the 2023 salary cap by about $35.5 million.

Not bad considering they were over the cap by more than $58 million just a few weeks ago, and they haven’t lost a single player. With free agency on the horizon in March, it’s vital that the Saints continue to set up their books to keep their best talent in town and prepare for new additions. So what comes next?

If Maye does get suspended precedent would put it at two games. No biggie.

Re: 2023 Saints Salary Cap Watch

Let's see. If Marcus Maye misses two games and Alvin Kamara misses six games, then that's a total of eight games missed because of suspensions next year. Apparently, we need better depth just to cover for our players on suspension. I'm not complaining. Just saying this is an issue.

Draft another safety while you're at it.

The Saint's best players (DD, Cam, HB, MT) are a year OLDER. It's time to start the youth movement.

Take your lumps in 2023.

If they had fired Dennis Allen this year that would be the correct move. But since he is trying to save his job he will do whatever he can to win this season.

Look at it this way. They are far more in tune with what's going on with the organization than any fan by a tremendous margin. If they felt like keeping Dennis Allen and Pete Carmichael was the best move I fully trust them more than i would trust anyone looking at it from the outside with no inside knowledge.

But I guess that's just me Rugs. I know what I don't know so I trust those who do. As K_Major used to say, and I'll turn it a bit, I'm not even a couch GM so what would I know?

I've seen plenty of losing organizations who were in tune with the players and ultimately failed. It all starts at the top with Dennis Allen. I was very hesitant about Dennis Allen as the head coach when he was hired and I might have been right initially.

Salary cap? What salary cap are we talking about? 2030? Certainly not this year or next year.

It's still kicking cans down the road. If a team has spent near their cap limit and someone gets hurt it becomes hard to bring in a good player because we don't have the money. Not to mention no reason for doing it if we're just going to win at mid level or below.

The system obviously has drawbacks like paying $20 million to players who are no longer on the roster at the end of their contracts. Khai Harley's accounting system seems to be the new normal in the NFL as more teams are adopting the accounting method. I'm still surprised that Godhell didn't stop us from taking "unfair advantage" of the rest of the NFL and "nip it in the bud" early on though.

We've been using this formula for the past decade and a half and over that period we've accumulated one of the very best won loss records in the entire NFL. There's a reason why more and more teams are switching to this proven method.

They all had defensive performance pools run by the players. It was as common as pain meds in the NFL.

Yeah, I know you're kidding, but it's becoming clear to more and more teams that the best way to maximize the value of cap dollars is to account for them in later periods when they make up a smaller percentage of the overall cap. Ten years ago it was just the Saints doing this. Now it's half the league.

As a cap geek I think it's cool.

Re: 2023 Saints Salary Cap Watch

Cap conversions are a useful tool but the best way to utilize them is not on a year to year survival basis digging out of massive cap debt ahead of the start of every league year like we do. The biggest problem with our strategy is that is means you don't have the money to undo a big mistake in free agency. If you sign a total dud to a megadeal and quickly realize its a mistake, its important to have the cap room to take a $20-40 million cap hit now to save $50-80 million cap in the long run. You also get a lot more comp picks and trade picks if all your contracts don't end with voidable years that make both comp picks and franchise tags impossible.

The way to use cap conversions is not just to forever be funding 2023 team on 2024 cap dollar and so on. The way to use them is in moderation and with timing. So maybe you do a cap conversion to bring in a franchise changing player widely considered top 5 at their position. Or to free up money to take the cap hit to get rid of a big mistake. Denver might have cap conversions in its future if Wilson has to be cut in a couple years. But best of all, if you didn't need cap conversions the previous year, and haven't already spent 2023's money in 2022, you can spend BOTH 2023's money and 2024's money disproprionately in 2023 if you feel this is your window, and you can field a super team while you are in that window.

We are not timing windows. We are not fielding super teams. We are living paycheck to paycheck at the payday loan. And as a result, we can't cut bad contracts, we roll with 25% dead money and more than that in Andrus Peat style zombie money on our roster every year, we don't get many comp picks even when we lose lots of stars, and we could not apply the franchise tag in many cases if we wanted to, yet we have to compete with super teams that used cap conversion more selectively to maximize their talent a couple years during a key window and were willing to rebuild when that window was closed so they could be fielding super teams again in a couple years with a young affordable QB.

I was a Houston Oiler fan when they went to Tennessee and liked them under Jeff Fisher well enough to pull for them when I lived in Chattanooga. Jeff Fisher just retired from the USFL two months before the start of this season and is being replaced by former NFL coach Mike Nolan for anyone who is interested in trivia.
