Re: New Orleans Saints Hall of Shame: Worst breakup and more
Here are some from the Beginning:
In 1967 The Saints committed a colossal blunder by trading the first overall selection to the Baltimore Colts for Gary Cuozzo, the backup quarterback to Johnny Unitas. Cuozzo began the season as the Saints' starter, but lost the job to expansion draftee Billy Kilmer. Cuozzo was traded to the Minnesota Vikings early in 1968. Baltimore selected Michigan State All-America defensive end BUBBA ( "I ALSO LIKE THEIR EASY OPENING CANS") SMITH with the first pick. Smith became a star for the Colts, starting at left end for their Super Bowl III and Super Bowl V teams. Then With their SECOND FIRST ROUND PICK #26 selected LB Les Kelly from Alabama, played just 3 seasons in the NFL without ever starting. Kevin Hardy -- 1968 (No. 7 overall) You remember Kevin Hardy the Saint, right? Oh wait, no you don't, because the Saints' seventh-overall draft pick in 1968 never played a snap in a Saints uniform. Instead, he washed around to four different teams before eventually drifting off into NFL obscurity, only holding a place on lists such as this and in the nightmares of diehard Saints fans. In 1973 they did it again with the Colts trading the #1 pick to them for Billy Newsome and pick #86 that resulted in the Saints selecting LB Jim Merlow. Baltimore said "Thanks Again" and used the pick to select BERT JONES Not satisfied they also traded pick#3 to Dallas for LB Tom Stincic, played a whole 7 games and had 0's in all stats! Dallas said thank you very much and drafted " THE BEAUTIFUL" HARVEY MARTIN" Harvey who played in four Pro Bowls, was a part of the famed ‘Doomsday Defense’ and set team records with 114 career sacks including 20 in the 1977 season alone. He led the Cowboys in sacks several times.. 1974 RICK MIDDLETON instead of the anchor of the "Orange CRUSH" All Pro RANDY GRADISHAR also a WR by the name of LYNN SWANN was available!! Who could forget 1977 7th overall pick "JOE (I WON A SUPERBOWL WITHOUT MAKING A TACKLE) Campbell" |

If they traded Sproles rather than let him walk to the Falcons, I'm good with that.
