I feel like Jadaveon Clowney is the defense version of Andrus Peat. Flashed potential, not consistent, always hurt. I am glad we did not somehow end up being able to draft Jadaveon Clowney because if we did, he would probably still be on the team, maybe making about 3x the $2.5 million I am glad we passed on Clowney for, and we would be praising him for agreeing to take a pay cut and help defer the $20 million in dead money we would owe if he moved on, and bragging about how many 1st round picks we had on our dline.

They are very similar players. Both born in 1993. Both somehow made 3 pro bowls based on the reputation of the offense/defense they played for, while never been seen as dominant players in the pros. Both tend to play more than half the season but always miss games, creating chaos in their rotations, and often playing and producing at less than 100%. Peat has played Guard and Tackle, Clowney has played DE and OLB. I think if we had not been fools resigning Peat, he would have bounced around the league to a new team every year just like Clowney, and would probably sign for around $2.5 million this year.

Clowney has been much better than Peat. He’s very disruptive and is an elite rune defender. He also hasn’t really played two positions. He’s been an EDGE his entire career. He never played as a true, 4-3 LB. He was a 3-4 EDGE rusher which show versatility for schemes. Peat had to move to guard because he was trash at tackle. Clowney has maintained his position as an EDGE. He hasn’t put up the crazy sack numbers but he’s been a great player for a long time. His problem is attitude and entitlement

At some point, you have to develop your draft picks. That's what the teams that are always contending (post-season run) do every year.

The same goes for Breesee. He'll "flash" this season but it takes time.
The gross part is that the Saints HAVE focused on both DL and OL fairly heavily with 1st round picks and other early round picks in recent years, unfortunately they've whiffed a lot with the selections it seems. Frustrating.

It happens. Drafting is, at best, an inexact science. Especially when dealing with humans that are on average twice as big as the average person and counting on them being twice as athletic.

But, that's no reason to stop trying.

Oh I agree, and they definitely shouldn't stop. It's just annoying both lines are arguably the biggest weak points on the team given how much draft capital they've sunk into them the past few years, it should be the strength of the team. The Payton Turner pick was just bizarre.

I've not given up on Turner and I believe our offensive line can be elite IF they can just stay healthy. And if our defensive line is a weak point then I think we are poised to win it all.

You have to draft the right players but you need the right coaches to develop those players. Apparently, we don't draft well in the first round. Sometimes. Yeah. But not often enough. Plus, there's that injury bug thing that follows us around that limits player development.
