As for Hurst, he hasn't look good in either games. He might be a better candidate for "benching". Not to mention Ruiz played poorly last night. The Oline (collectively), needs to improve. But in the end, I'm just a couch coach, GM and head trainer . |

Re: Observations from the Saints Win vs Panthers
- First half especially was an utter snooze-fest. We need to get better in the redzone. Need to ditch these "slow starts" that have become so frequent in the 2020's.
- The run D issues from 2022 seem mostly addressed! - Granderson and Alonte Taylor are elevating their play big-time. - I don't think there is much point at using Taysom at TE anymore. J. Johnson and Moreau can hold it down. He serves this team best as a power-runner at HB or FB or from the QB Power set. Would love to see more of him as a rotational HB. Treat him like he's Mike Alstott, not Tony Gonzales or Shannon Sharpe. - Next week vs Packers will be a bigger test. Love is much further along than Bryce Young. |

Re: Observations from the Saints Win vs Panthers
- First of all, it's clear that defenses are WAY ahead of offenses in the games I have seen so far this season. Clearly with the Saints, but also teams across the league. This makes sense given the lack of playing time the collective offensive lines and key skill position players have seen in the preseason. I expect improvement weekly.
- The offensive line had their hands full with Burns, Houston, and company, but so will most teams this season. - Penning looked much better. - Defense was dictating what the offense could do for both teams. See the first point above. - Thomas is still Thomas and accounted for multiple big first downs. - Even with all of the pressure in Carr's face he still made throws that we haven't seen in years. - For the second straight week we won the turnover battle (2 to 1) even without the one we would have had if Adebo hadn't fouled. - I like that we showed a commitment to the run. 33 runs to 37 passes. 134 yards on the ground against that Carolina defense isn't bad. - Getting Kendre Miller back next week and Kamara the following week will be a shot in the arm for the offense, I believe, coupled with another week to gel for the line. - Taysom finally got some sizable usage out there and it paid off big. - Grupe once again looked great in every phase and Hedley, not as much. Not horrible (42.0 average), but nothing special. - Granderson is becoming a beast. - Cam Jordan never seems to age. - Olave, Shaheem, and Thomas all made great catches at key moments. - Tony Jones came through big when needed. |

Re: Observations from the Saints Win vs Panthers
I'll take winning these so called "ugly" games over losing them any day of the week. Last year we would have lost both of these first two games. Winning can become contagious, as can losing. Our offense managed to run out the clock with the lead both weeks. That's something we were totally unable to do the last couple of years.
2-0 baby! :bng: |

This will be a bit of a hit for the Panthers moving forward.

Re: Observations from the Saints Win vs Panthers
Here's at least some good news on Penning. He's one of only four regular tackles in the league (at least 64) that has not committed a penalty.

Re: Observations from the Saints Win vs Panthers
Overall, good win against a division opponent which is never easy.
However, my biggest concern is still the same concern I have expressed for the last 3 years. Our offensive play calling is just awful at times, we don't adapt to what the defense is doing and when we find something that works we don't stick to it. The announcers pointed out several play calls that didn't make sense to them. Carr will be better with Kamara, he needs a check down for the quick rush, but the play calling in general won't get better with Pete. |
Re: Observations from the Saints Win vs Panthers
It's hard to put too much blame on playcalling when plays are getting blown up before they can take place.

Kay has this right!
If she wants to come to a game I guess I could leave my wife at home and Kay can use the ticket. :D Or not. :couch: |
Re: Observations from the Saints Win vs Panthers
I’ll make a similar observation as after game one; Some like to put a negative spin on a W. Are there problems, sure. Are there things that need working on, absolutely! Have we played well enough to be 2-0…Hell Yeah.

Re: Observations from the Saints Win vs Panthers
One of my happy moments in this game was seeing Andy Dalton come into the game and was not in a Saints uniform.

Bring in another RB.
Miller has yet to play an NFL game, Williams (hamstrings can linger for months) is dealing with a sore hamstring and our star RB is still on suspension. I would have kept Merriweather over TJJ. 17 games + the possibility of post season is a grind. |
Re: Observations from the Saints Win vs Panthers
A bit of further info for the Panthers/Falcons game. Here is a link to the team stats:
https://www.espn.com/nfl/matchup/_/gameId/401547403 Carolina had a lead in the game and it was tied in the fourth. Carolina had more first downs, more passing yards, more rushing, yards. What gave Atl the W was a rookie quarterback, playing his first NFL game ever in a hostile crowd turning the ball over. |

I don't think it's premature here but maybe I owe Jeff Duncan an apology.
He was spot on when he said Carl Granderson has been playing out of his mind at camp. I see now. That strip sack & turnover was textbook. Carl is becoming a serious force off the edge. |

Panthers Derrick Brown trying to start crap with Michael Thomas after the game.

I think Bryce Young is going to be a tough out in the near future. He's got the physical ability and looks unfazed in the game.

Re: Observations from the Saints Win vs Panthers
You could be right but with the Panther Oline and with BY’s size more probable that he gets hit just one time in a full on rush by a big Dlineman and it’s game over. He might have been successful escaping in SEC trying tha in the NFL is like a dog chasing cars … it takes just one time. Thinking and remembering RG3.
