"Saints offensive line failed Derek Carr today, and we could all see it coming" - Nick Underhill.

That 2 min rant from Underhill is probably the realist I've heard from him in years.

“He’s going to die”. That’s a pretty serious statement. On pace for being sacked 68 times. I see o line talent but not in the play. Maybe a change in coaching is due. A new o line coach couldn’t hurt

Could be a week. Could be a little over a month. Depends on severity.

Re: DC$'s AC Injury

I have seen past reports of quarterbacks coming back the next week from an AC Sprain. Some are their non-throwing shoulder but others are their throwing shoulder. Drew Lock missed 3 games in 2020. Kyler Murray had an AC sprain to his throwing shoulder but did not miss a game. Justin Fields had one to his non-throwing shoulder, came back the next week, then took 1 week off. Bryce Young had one at Bama and missed 1 game. If you search Tom Brady AC joint he had numerous injuries to both shoulders over the years, played through all of them as far as I can tell, but had some kind of surgery in the offseason in 2004 on his throwing shoulder due to clicking etc, and tried to twist to land on his non throwing shoulder after that.

It seems like many can play through this injury if they have a lower grade sprain but based on Carr's initial reaction and the grim initial outlook, it seems likely that he has a relatively more severe sprain more in line with Drew Lock and will miss a few weeks, or more if further tests like an MRI show more issues.

Is it too late to bring in another lineman who can block and protect the QB? It's not like we didn't all see this one coming.

Losing Trai Turner was big. I also don’t think Penning is a LT. He might be a better fit on the right side or at Guard.

Re: DC$'s AC Injury

I think this injury and our issues with oline relate to salary cap management. Yes, we have lots of 1st and 2nd round picks on our oline, it appears to show we care about the position. But lots of other teams have spent those kind of picks on oline too if you count back to 2015, and some of them were great and are all pros now, while others washed out of the league and are no longer on their rosters. Sometimes they ended up with two players whose best position was the same, and they let go of one in free agency and picked up a replacement who was a natural at another position. Some of these former high picks of other teams who were busts, now journeymen, tried out for us in camp and we cut them. Many other teams might have an oline made up entirely of 1st and 2nd round picks if they almost never cut or benched or replaced their 1st or 2nd round picks when those picks didn't pan out, or if they almost never replaced those picks with free agents who played better or better fit their scheme, but other teams have a lot of accountability and after a few years they move on from the failures, even if they were high picks.

But with how leveraged our salary cap is, most of our high oline picks are approached with a philosophy of 'this has to work' because we don't have much money to replace them in free agency, and we need to restructure their contracts annually to help get under the cap each year, which creates a mountain of prorated debt that would be a big problem in our salary cap situation if they departed and it hit as dead money. So we end up throwing good money after bad, and instead of being able to trade, cut, or let walk the ones that don't work out, we shuffle their positions and restructure their contracts and they stay forever, unless they get so expensive that we get outbid like happened with Armstead.

So, I think the high picks on our line are deceiving. Andrus Peat was a high pick in 2015 but has mostly been a bust and on any other team he would be gone by now. Penning looked raw and was hurt his first year and other teams would not rely on him to start at left tackle without a good backup. Ruiz's struggles his first two years might have got him benched on other teams. Essentially we are managing our oline by making high picks then taking a 'ride or die' approach, and Carr almost got killed. It is what it is, but if we had a little more cap space long term, or didn't trade up so much in the draft and had more picks, or could afford the 1 year cap hit with a long term cap savings of moving on from a bad contract, we could replace the duds like Peat. Instead we just keep playing musical chairs giving our oline auditions are every position on the line before sending them to the bench, and then switching the positions they are more effective at because another oline can't play his position... Well, I just think its all connected. And I think continuing to extend Peat when he has been very ineffective just sends the wrong message to the rest. Peat basically has a union job. If Ruiz's 34 games of mediocrity turn out to be more representative than his 19 games of improvement, he has a union job too, because we will never be able to afford to move on. Ramczyk and McCoy have been great but at times there are signs the injuries may add up and take their toll, but at the same time we have been restructuring their contracts annually and making them impossible to exit down the road. They all have union jobs. They may have come to realize it, watching Peat.

He's week to week, and felt better today than yesterday.

I'm optimistic he'll miss one week, be back for the Pats.

Honestly speaking. I hope not.

This Oline has serious, serious issues. Guys repeatedly whiffing on blocks, DE running full sprint to our QB. Let DCarr sit out this week. Right now, that line can't protect.

There is a real possibility Tampa will lose tonight.

JW is capable. For at least a game or two.

Boston Saint 09-25-2023 04:46 PM

Re: DC$'s AC Injury

I am much less confident than I was about Winston. I always thought that, with his stats, He was capable of being a very good quarterback. He looked like a deer in headlights when he replaced Carr. I keep waiting for him to take control given all the chances he’s had and it just hasn’t happened. I understand that he’s had injuries and certainly that makes a difference. That being said he had a chance to step in with a 17 point lead and guide the team to victory, and he couldn’t do it.

BakoSaint 09-25-2023 05:04 PM

Re: DC4's AC Injury

There is a strong probability that Tampa will lose tonight. They play the Eagles, reigning NFC Champs with franchise QB and rock solid oline and dline. If Tampa wins tonight, they overwhelmingly become the favorites in our division, though a let down next week against us could easily happen if they do win tonight, just due to over-celebration. I don't think Tampa will win tonight, but there is the the possibility that Baker Mayfield is a good QB again, just like we hoped Winston just needed a change of scenery in 2022. Even if they don't win, that is a real possibility, whereas their losing to the Eagles is a strong probability even if their QB play matches up somehow.

I think Carr could play on Sunday or only miss a week or two. However, I think the discomfort will likely affect his mechanics and accuracy for a few weeks. When the choice is rusty Tom Brady vs Hoyer its obvious that rusty Tom Brady is better. If its rusty Carr vs Winston, it might be more a case of 'eh, how rusty exactly, is he 80% or is he 60%?' I could see a scenario where Carr is the active as the backup or a scenario where Carr starts but Winston takes a lot of practice snaps and is standing by for cases of arm fatigue and hail marys. We might be in a situation like when Winston was playing hurt last year before being benched or when we wouldn't bench an injured Brooks for Delhomme.

I have a little throw up in my mouth but I’m going to say it….I would prefer him sit this week if it means he’s going to be healthy the following week. (Even more throw up) JW would need to start.

He’s going to be touch and go, and more touchy than go. Shell-Shocked from an abysmal O-Line, and excuses will be made for poor performance. Not hating on Winston as a backup… but… we’ve been here before, correct? So here we are. Again. I say throw Taysom in and let him THROW as much as run, and at least the fans can have some fun until we replace the whole coaching staff.

No disrespect to DCarr but he's not Drew Brees.

Take your time & get healthy Derek. The NFL season is a marathon.

Brees had a pretty significant drop off compared to 2013, I wonder if that injury had anything to do with that?

He's not Drew but he might heal as quickly as the best QB of all time. Don't rush him back though. That offensive line is going to get him killed. It's.....offensive! :awe:

Rugs,

If you don't fix this oline, Jameis is next.

Did you see that sack he took ? GB defender went right by Landon Young.

The last thing I want to see is a 70-80% DCarr go back out there and take another sack. Saints lead the league in sacks given up.

That's a problem boss.

With all the rules to protect the QB’s and then allow a 300 lb D linemen to have a QB in the grasp spin him 180 degrees slamming him into ground with your whole body and not call a flagrant foul much not eject him. NY should have stepped in (as they do at times) and made the call … oh right I forgot NY called gotohell first and he said … na it’s the Saints.

I am sure our coaching staff can whip up their specialty: excuses.

Maye will still be suspended and Adebo could be out so hang their backups out to to dry one on one with evans or godwin and then blame a loss on Maye’s suspension etc.

The oline sucks so have carr hold the ball forever and blame the oline, especially any injury replacement where you can blame injuries, and say they are 1st round picks so its not your fault.

Kamara will have his first game back. Set him up to fail and blame rust and the suspension.

For all the rosies, this will allow them to write off the year and lobby for giving DA an extension.

Vast majority of the folks here agree with you man. If I could give you some advice though, I'd suggest blocking Guido. You'll still see a lot of his posts, because people quote him relentlessly, mostly when they're arguing with him..but it does help a little. You'll never be able to reason with him, and he'll always resort to name calling and questioning your fanhood for daring to have an opinion that differs from his own. You're more likely to have a meaningful conversation with a wall than with him.

By win I am going to assume you mean have a successful season. If we have a successful season I will admit I was wrong about some things and apparently we could still contend.

Here is how I would define a successful season:

Actual successful season: We make the playoffs and either win 2+ playoff games or at least at a minimum for this year to show growth we win the first game by more than 10 and lose the second game by less than 10.

Gray area season: We have a winning record, perhaps get a wildcard or the title of a weak division, and maybe if we face a really weak opponent the ball bounces our way in a tight game in the first round of the playoffs and we slay the dragon that is green bay, seattle with drew lock filling in, nyg, etc. But even if all that goes right we get trounced in round 2 and its clear we are not real championship contenders.

Unsuccessful season: We have a losing record.

If we have a successful season by my standards I will admit I was wrong about multiple aspects of my evaluation of our team. If we have a gray area season you will probably feel we are one player away and need to go all in while I will feel we are an aging mediocre team and need to start fresh with a youth movement and changes at the top, agree to disagree. If we have a losing season I hope you will see that there is no sense retaining a head coach with 5 straight losing seasons in that role who can’t win with the most all-in f-the-cap approach in the league and his hand picked most expensive free agent qb. Obviously I want Loomis gone too if we have a losing season, but at a minimum he would need to fire this coach who you all said had us destined for 12-5 this year and last.

I seldom, if ever, resort to name calling. I do debate issues, especially when someone makes a false claim. I have called out someone's ignorance on occasion, but that is not calling someone a name. Ignorance is not a label, it is a description. I'll be the first to admit my ignorance on many subjects, including what goes on inside of NFL front offices and locker rooms. I feel that most of the active members here are very intelligent, but that doesn't mean at times that there are instances where we can show our ignorance on certain topics.

It's interesting that you bring up name calling because I am fairly confident that I have been (correctly defined) "called a name" a hundred, nay, a thousand fold over what someone may have erroneously interpreted as my doing the same.

Yes, by all means, please block me since all you ever post here are uninformed attacks on me anyway.

Now, enjoy your day as I plan to enjoy mine.

Ice up Carr.

Not sure what happened to the oline this season.
They held up better protecting Dalton last year.

This is an experienced group full of 1st/2nd rounders.

Expect Todd Bowles defense to blitz until the Saints can figure it out.
