Re: 2024 Salary Cap Likely to be Higher Than Projected

Article does not say what it was last year. Just what it was eons ago.

Here is the Spotrac info. And you can filter by year.

It appears to be a $20 million difference.

Lots of dead cap $, yikes. Effectively managed, the Saints still can over time get themselves out of the overspending frenzy under which they've justified their decisions. It's in essence a $63 million difference they need to manage with restructures, etc...

However much it increases, we need it.

Re: 2024 Salary Cap Likely to be Higher Than Projected

I know that some folks don't like living on a credit card. But we have millions of extra dollars every year to spend on the team now and pay later with more money from the salary cap increase. The best thing about living on the credit card in the NFL is that there are no credit card fees. Just free money that increases every year that we don't have an epidemic.

For Klint Kubiak to succeed we need to invest heavily this year on the O line in free agency as well as early and often in the draft. Maybe even give him a possession receiver. While we're at it, let's get an edge to get after the QB. Just sayin'.

Do we push the cap too tightly? Yes! Do I expect to change how much money we owe future players? Yes. Mickey even hinted at getting back to a more manageable salary cap at the end of the season. We will restructure contracts but they won't be as cumbersome. It may take a couple of years but if the salary cap keeps increasing more than expected each year then we'll catch up even sooner.

People around here claim that the Saints are the worst about voidable year contracts creating dead cap. Take a look at this. This is a list of all contracts that void today. I see lots of teams in that list, but I don't see the Saints. Voidable years is becoming more and more commonplace in today's way of managing cap.

Last year's cap was $224,800,000.

The Saints only have $2.841 million of dead cap for 2024. That's the 11th lowest figure in the league. Twenty-one teams have more dead cap than the Saints in 2024. The league average is $7.7 million. Twelve teams have over $10.5 million in dead cap.

Re: 2024 Salary Cap Likely to be Higher Than Projected

Projections have gone back and forth. The cap for 2024 was expected to be about $255 million as of Fall 2023 and them expectations dropped to anout $240 million. One analyst now thinks it may be as much as $250 million while others are saying $242-$243 million.

Here is my article on how the salary cap is not like an interest free credit card:

Holy cow I must be the first sports fan in history to make a website advocating to fire a coach or GM. It’s unheard of. And registering a domain costs like $20 a year. And I would have had to buy a keyboard if I didn’t already have one for Microsoft Word. OMG beyond help lol.
