He supposedly was going to wear one but changed his mind just before the game. It's like players wearing ultra light shoes which have no support leading to lisfranc injuries. Or not wearing thigh padding and suffering bone bruises and such. Much of the available safety equipment is not mandated, just "suggested".

I hate to be that guy but I think his career is over. We need to get what we can now
