The Lions had the success they did because their offense got out to fast starts and piled on the points, basically forcing teams to go one dimensional.
Adequate defense by great offense.

Another factor with Glenn is that clearly his head coach is a strong motivator and personality. If the head coach is more of an offensive whiz or a defensive whiz you can look at the side of the ball that is their expertise and realize there is a risk that the head coach is the real coordinator but maybe the coordinator is an expert understudy who brings the same skill, and you can look at the coordinator on the other side of the ball fairly independently for their body of work. But if the coach is more of a motivator and leadership figure than a scheme whiz, the head coach is probably a multiplier on both coordinators. If a coordinator can produce top 5 units maybe they could do that without the head coach, maybe not. But if the coordinator is producing 20-30 ranked units, as Glenn has, I have to wonder if he would produce 25-32 ranked units without the benefit of a Campbell's motivation and leadership. Dan Campbell strikes me as a very strong personality, an alpha type leader, but often that type of coach sucks up all the air in the room and does not surround themselves with equally strong personalities, they surround themselves with natural subordinates.
At least when the Jets hired Robert Saleh, they hired a defensive coordinator from a team that was known for their defense, and where the offensive minded head coach was known as more of a scheme nerd than a master motivator getting the entire team fired up. Now the Jets have returned to the formula of hiring a defensive coordinator from a winning team, except they picked a winning team that got less far in the playoffs, had a mediocre to poor defense, and where the only thing keeping that defense from being ranked 32 may have been a head coach whose leadership skill equally benefitted the defense.
