Saints Hire Brandon Staley as DC

this is a discussion within the Saints Community Forum; 3-4 won't be an overnight thing. I'm thinking he's taking the same approach as Kellen - tailor to your strengths - players....

Re: Saints Hire Brandon Staley as DC

I'm of the opinion that we have just as many holes in a 4-3 as we do in a 3-4, or close to it. Most of our front 7 is replaceable with value free agents and draft picks. We're loaded with JAGs (just a guy).

Former Saints linebacker on converting from a 4-3 base to Brandon Staley's 3-4 scheme
Nothing new under the sun, I suppose. I'm just adding to the fray.
With the change in scheme comes a change in style of player. “You need different body types on the defensive line. You need different linebackers," Shanle told the WWL podcast. The biggest thing the Saints need to address is the outside linebacker position. It’s the first position that comes to Shanle’s mind in a 3-4 defense. For the Saints, that’s not a good thing.

“I think number one thing when someone say they’re going to a 3-4 defense you better have outside linebackers.” Shanle described the necessary players as guys who can “stand up and get after the passer then be athletic enough to drop back in zone coverage.”

edit: The article states that Foskey could thrive at OLB if it "clicks" for him. Granderson may be the other OLB.

Re: Saints Hire Brandon Staley as DC

Is Carl Granderson A Fit For Brandon Staley's New-Look Saints Defense?
Defensive end Carl Granderson has been with the New Orleans Saints for the entirety of his six-year NFL career. He's gone from an undrafted rookie out of Wyoming in 2018 to one of the team's most consistent defensive players.
Granderson has been a defensive end in the Saints' 4-3 system his entire career.
At 6'5" and 261-Lbs., he has the length and athleticism to be a stand-up rusher in Staley's 3-4 scheme. Despite his lanky frame, his power and strength might also be adequate enough to be an end on a three-man line.
