An open letter to Tom Benson
Dear (and I use that term loosely) Mr. Benson:
I would like to officially submit my name as your new head-coach/GM. It has to be both, because if I am going to do this, it has to be without anyone else having an opportunity to thwart my efforts. What experience do I have you ask? How about 40 plus years of following pro football on a religious basis, which encompasses the entire duration of the Saints' existence. I feel that this by itself should be enough to at least warrant some consideration for the position. Why do I feel like I should get the shot? It is because I have had my ideas of things that we should have done throughout their existence, but rarely have seen these things come to fruition. By this reasoning I can easily say that if they would have done the things that I hoped for that maybe things would have turned out differently. Also, there is this gut feeling that I have always had that if I were calling the shots we would have been successful a long time ago. I played football through Jr. college, so I do have a reasonable amount of knowledge of the game. What would I change. Well, for starters, I would bring discipline to this team which it has been sorely missing for quite some time now. I would surround myself with quality coaches, and I would allow them to do what they do best with minimal interference from me. My job would be to bring the whole thing together and keep it that way. Anyone who feels they are above being disciplined would soon find themselves looking for another gig. I am so confident that I could bring a winner to NO that I would be willing to work for free. I know I have your attention now. However, if I am right, and you hire me and we do make the playoffs, then you will have to pay me double whatever you pay Haz and Mickey for a year. If I am wrong, nothing ventured, nothing gained. Just think of the publicity you would draw by actually allowing a true fan to take over the reins. I think it would put people in the stands just out of curiosity. Isn't that what you really covet. So, there it is. I have officially thrown my name in the hat. Just to simplify things, just go away with this knowledge. Here is an opportunity for you to make a winner out of this franchise, and if you dismiss it lightly, you may never obtain the winner that you and I and all of the rest of the greatest fans in the world desire. Sincerely, Saint_LB PS--For all of you that haven't realized this yet, I am obviously not living my life with the thought that someone may actually take this seriously, but wouldn't it be cool if they did allow me or one of our other great fans have a crack at doing something that none of the other so-called legitimate coaches or GM's could do...with the sole exception of Jim Finks. It is just too bad that his health prevented him from continuing to build on the success that he brought to this franchise. |
