Mel likes Linehart

Chris (New Orleans, LA): Mel, What do you see the Saints doing with the 2nd overall pick? Based on what you know about Matt Leinart, do you see him demanding a trade if picked by the Saints?

Mel Kiper: I think he's got to become a Saint. If you have No. 2 and he's there, you start the LEinart era with the Saints. If NO can get him, Saints fans should be thrilled. He'll carry a higher grade than Eli Manning. It'd be a great, great pick.

Everyone has been complaining here over the last couple of seasons that we needed to draft an impact linebacker of DT. Now, Leinhart is available and everyone thinks he will be the savior. Has everyone got the Hasbeen disease?

Hawk all the way. We will get extra picks and still get him and be able to draft a quality QB with the 34th pick overall. I still like Jacobs and I still like the trade with Oakland AB for Collins and maybe another pick or two in return.

Stick a fork in Kerry Collins because he is done.

CheramieIII 01-08-2006 11:16 AM

RE: Mel likes Linehart

Either Collins, Kitna or Volek right now would be my only choices. Collins seems to thrive when he lands on another team for the first year or two, with the exception of the Saints, but does anyone really thrive while playing for the Saints.

wheelman 01-08-2006 11:38 AM

RE: Mel likes Linehart

I think Collins still has three to four seasons left in him. I know he had a bad year, but he was asked to do something that I think he has never been good at anyway. He is more of a game manager than a gun slinger. When you look at his best years with the Giants, they won with a ball control offense and solid defense. If we built up our defense and landed a good left tackle, we could win with him.

I heard that Linehart might pull a "Eli" on us, if we draft him. Is that true?

CheramieIII 01-08-2006 11:45 AM

RE: Mel likes Linehart

I read that somewhere too but don't put too much into that. Even if he did do what Eli did we would get alot more out of trading him than keeping him.

D_it_up 01-08-2006 11:48 AM

RE: Mel likes Linehart

IF that is the case with Leinart, then I say buy the farm for him. Get four draft picks by trading down with a team in need of a QB who is in the 8th-12th pick range...That way we get their 1st and 2nd rounder this year, and maybe a first and third next year. Possibly even a 2nd pick.

story on nfl countdown... leinerts arm my not be fully healed from the injury he suffered last year n had surgery on...

RE: Mel likes Linehart

and you know if we draft this guy that shiiiiitttt is going to be a problem forever guys. Stay away from this one. There are more great QB's in NFL history drafted after the first round than in the first round. Our odds are better if we wait until the second round to draft a QB.

doesn't he have ankle issues too cause he is always wearing that brace and if somethings wrong with him the saints would pass on him and draft you know who!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i think it would be best to draft someone who doesn't have secret injuries that never fully healed yet and remember our o line isn't really good and he going to get killed and he can't scramble.

CheramieIII 01-08-2006 12:12 PM

RE: Mel likes Linehart

I noticed that brace on his leg the other night and did not like that at all and coupled with the arm is not fully healed thing I say take a pass on this one.

Take the trade down and take the picks Build for the next two years in the draft.

You people are incredible. A guy who is graded to be better than Eli Manning is available, and you don't want him? A guy who has everything a franchise with 13 losses needs is available, and you want to trade down for more picks?

Quote:

Who said any of those teams are willing to trade four picks for Leinart? Who even said that any of those teams need a quarterback, or are planning on addressing it in the first round? Maybe one of those teams does need a QB, but if we trade all the way down to the 8th-12th spot, who would we take then? Because by that time Hawk will be gone. Brick will be gone.

Quote:

Kerry COllins is awful, we see what he's done with the Raiders. He's washed up. Kitna sucks. Volek is asking for big time money. Why are any of those good choices? THe quarterback position is the most important position in football, and you want to bring in a washed up old guy (Collins or Kitna) to lead this team? That's ridiculous. Matt Leinart is a proven winner who is going to be amazing. He's the poster boy for franchise player.

Quote:

The Hasbeen disease? What exactly is that? If by Hasbeen disease you mean wanting to get a great quarterback in order to fill the biggest hole on our team, then yeah, I guess I have the Hasbeen disease. Right now our DTs are playing well, and we can always draft a good LB in the 2nd round. There are at least 5 quality outside LBs in this draft, and 3 quality MLBs in the draft, so I know that there will be some available at the 34th pick. But the drop off between Matt Leinart and Omar JAcobs is humongous. Our defense played well last year, well enough to show that our offense is what needs upgrading.

How do you know we will be able to draft down and still get all these extra picks you keep talking about? Even if we did, there's still no way a team in their right mind can pass up on a guy like Leinart, a player who you can build a franchise around, in order to get a few extra picks that, knowing the Saints, won't even pan out. How could you justify that? Jacobs is pretty good... in the MAC. And from what I hear, he has as many or more injury problems than Leinart, so where were you going with that? And please don't talk about this trade for Collins. That's just being idealistic. Kerry Collins isn't worth the toilet paper he wipes his old arse with. We might get a 6th or 7th rounder for him.

I only said that scenario IF Leinart pulled an Eli on us.

Also, I think you guys are just making up injuries, or blowing minor injuries out of proportion. I don't think he's missed a game in several years.

O.K., even if he is hurt, that should be more reason to take him. If he plays that good hurt, just think of what he can do healthy!

Guys, we can get a stud LB in the 2nd: Bobby Carpenter, Abdul Hodge- one of them will be there.

We can't afford to pass on a franchise QB the likes of Leinart. We haven't had a shot at a top QB prospect since Archie & now we're talking Trade Down? That's been the franchise's problem for years. Break the cycle-Draft with sense!!!!!!

Where you keep holding out hope that a player is the savior of the team, like Hasbeen did with AB. Have you been paying attention, or like Hasbeen did with Cie Crant or Bouman or many other players. One player is not going to make our team better.

Do you think that the Titans want Leinhart or anyone other team for that matter. Even if another team did take Hawk after we traded down we could still take another one of those other quality linebacker you mentioned.

and you talk about being idealistic, you are the one that still thinks Deuce is all that and a bag of chips. Deuce will never be what he once was. He does not have the work ethic to do so. We will hold onto him being "idealistic" just like we did with AB and won't get shiiiittttt.

But I guess it's ok for you to be idealistic isn't it?

if he is really injured... which i really dont know if he is or not... i just sayin what they said... then it is that much more likely that he will reaggrivate the injury if it hasnt properly healed an we will be F***ed again...

RE: Mel likes Linehart

I'm not yet opposed to taking Linehart.

However, a number two pick is very valuable; we could probably get two lower first rounders for that pick. We still need to address LB (we need two) and DT (we need at least one). It seems we also need a CB. As for the offense, I'll cave, we need a QB and... well what else? A WR maybe? Our defense may not be THE problem, but it is still got the biggest holes.

If we take a rookie QB, it isn't even certain he'll play next year, is it? If our 1st round pick isn't an impact player immediately, we'll likely be looking at the same as this year next year too. Blah.

CheramieIII 01-08-2006 01:15 PM

RE: Mel likes Linehart

Hasbeen did and that's exactly why he held onto those guys. Everyone knows Bouman ain't no NFL QB and Grant can't even sniff the field without breaking a leg, hip or other body part that puts him out for the entire season.

CheramieIII 01-08-2006 01:16 PM

RE: Mel likes Linehart

UUst like Hasbeen drafted the WR from Cal last year knowing he would not play, what a great pickup. Hasbeen will do the samething anywhere he goes.

Hey I would be all for that, but the only problem is only one team has 2 first rounders. Denver has like the 22nd and 30th pick. Not too tempting

Let's try this again.

Matt Leinart has already informed the media that he will play for whatever team drafts him.

That team, love it or hate it, will be the New Orleans Saints.
