Saints Team Report: Strategy and Personnel

Minutes after being named the 14th head coach in Saints history on Wednesday, Sean Payton said it was too early to tell if he will retain any members of Jim Haslett's staff - including offensive coordinator Mike Sheppard and defensive coordinator Rick Venturi.

Assembling a staff is the first order of business for Payton, who said he will search the NFL as well as the college ranks to find the "best people, the best teachers" for his new team.
"Obviously, that's a priority right now," said Payton, who would not immediately identify individuals he might be considering. "The process is not easy. It's more difficult than it ever has been with the restrictions in our league. We'll follow those guidelines. We'll make sure and take our time."

UNIT-BY-UNIT ANALYSIS

QUARTERBACKS: Starter - Todd Bouman. Backups - Aaron Brooks, Adrian McPherson.

The Saints offense was a mess in 2005, and one of the main reasons was quarterback play. Brooks, who started 82 straight games dating to the 2000 season, was benched with three games left after throwing more interceptions (17) than touchdowns (13) for the first time in his career. He also completed just 55.7 percent of his passes and had a career-low 70.0 passer rating when former coach Jim Haslett finally pulled the plug. Brooks is due base salaries of $6.25 million in 2006 and $7.25 million in '07, so his future with the club is in the hands of new coach Sean Payton. Bouman wasn't much better with two TDs and seven interceptions - with eight turnovers in only three starts. Payton and the Saints will take a long look at taking either Matt Leinart or Vince Young with the second pick in the draft this spring.
