The greatest Saints game you've ever seen was when.....

For me....one of the best Saints games I've ever seen was against Dallas one year. I'd say this game was around 4 or 5 years ago but on that day the Saints' defense was unbelievable. They help Emmit Smith to a franchise low 28 yards on the day. The Saints literally destroyed the Dallas offense that game. I wish I could remember the final score.

What are some of your favorite Saints games ever?

RE: The greatest Saints game you

That was the game where Delhomme led our Saints to victory :D

All time favorite is the first playoff victory, against the Rams. It was like this huge weight had been lifted off my shoulders.

I agree with BnB. It would definitly have to be the playoff victory. All I can remember is the old lady sitting next to me in the stands raising her hands and thanking Jesus when they dropped that punt.

RE: The greatest Saints game you

That was the Delhomme Christmas Eve game? I thought maybe it might have been a different Dallas game but I remember that Christmas Eve game well. It was sad too cause it was a bad season and the Dome was lookin kinda empty. I remember one play where Delhomme lobbed a sweet bomb over Deion Sanders' head. He was *****in and complainin at the press conference after the game.

RE: The greatest Saints game you

The greatest Saints game that I've ever seen was actually a preseason game the first year (1991) the Saints won their division. It was at the Dome and they tore through the Steelers. Hebert was the QB. I saw Jackson, Swilling, Mills, Johnson, Martin. It was great. I know it was only preseason, but it is also the only game that I've ever seen in person. And being there in person made it great.

Love the helmet pic mjf. I also remember a Monday night game YEEEARS ago with Hebert when we shut out the Raiders like 23-0. What a solid performance from the Saints that night.

Since I can't get to NO or anywheres else, the best game I saw was the Jacksonville game. I hated the ending, but I loevd that play. I literally cried when Carney missed it.

saintswhodi 01-26-2006 09:29 AM

Greatest Saints game I ever saw? Going to Buffalo in the snow with John Fourcade and Dalton Hilliard and beating them. I did not think there was any way we could win a game in the snow, EVER, and we did. Dalton was awesome catching screen passes and passes to the flat. Still my favorite Saints player of all time. Good stuuf there. We did win that one right?

FatiusJeebs 01-26-2006 09:44 AM

I was a big Hilliard fan myself. I have seen pictures of that game and I do believe we won that won. They had a picture of Quinn Early celebrating in the endzone in that game.

saintswhodi 01-26-2006 09:51 AM

I don't think Quinn Early and Dalton played at the same time for the Saints did they? Maybe it was Eric Martin or someone in the endzone celebrating. Let me see if I can get more info. Okat, it was '89(so no Quinn Early), and we did win 22-19. And that was Dalton's pro bowl year. Maybe it was Lonzell Hill, Perriman, or Floyd Turner celebrating in the end zone outside of possiby Eric Martin.

FatiusJeebs 01-26-2006 10:02 AM

Ok.... I admit to error. That game was really a long time ago. But I do remember seeing pictures of that game and one in particular of a Saints reciever celebrating in the endzone covered with snow.

xan 01-26-2006 10:43 AM

12-23-1990, Saints 13, SF 10. Needing to win out the last two games to make the playoffs, this team of marginal talent and depth went on the road to beat the eventual (and defending) Super Bowl champion. A week later they rallied to beat Los Angeles at home to clinch the playoff spot. An inspiring win which set the stage for the Dome Patrol years.

Not really an error on your part, at least I don't think so. It was a long time ago. I had to look up some of the other facts, like who the receivers were back then, I only knew Dalton and Fourcade were playing, and that we won, well, I partially knew that, I had to look that up to be sure too. lol But that game sticks out in my mind as a Saints fan.

FatiusJeebs 01-26-2006 10:54 AM

Wait... I might be right. Early and Hilliard played together in '91 - '93. Now I do know that Buffalo game did happen around that time.

This is a cool page with some of the best Saints players throughout the years. I could swear if my memory serves me well (which I am sure it doesn't thanx to all the partying I did during my college years) but I remember the guy in the picture wearing a number 89.

Euphoria 01-26-2006 11:10 AM

HAKIM DROPPED THE BALL, HE DROPPED IT, HAKIM DROPPED THE BALL, game.

Now I was giving you a pass, so don't push it brotha. lol The game happened in 1989, and Quinn didn't come to the Saints until 1991. Also, John fourcade was not the QB when we had Quinn, Hebert and Steve Walsh were. Lastly, we neved played AT Buffalo when we had Quinn. Not once.

Great site.

FatiusJeebs 01-26-2006 11:45 AM

LOL....I just came back from break and while I was out I realized that you were right because that game happened in '89. We lost the '92 game cause I remember that Thurman Thomas was one of the few RB's that year that managed to run for over 100 yards agaist us. So I know for sure that I am wrong. I wish I could remember who was in that damn picture. Oh well...you were right and don't let it get to your head. ;0)

jergensl 01-26-2006 01:42 PM

i cannot remember the team we played against or the name of the wr right now, we picked him up from the steelers in the mid 90's.

on a punt or a kickoff the saints almost took a knee and the wr took it out of his teammates hand and ran it back for a touchdown. that game had a lot of crazy plays like that. that whole season was like that if i remember right.

dwiley21 01-26-2006 01:47 PM

Great topic! My fav. game was a Monday night game against the cowboys. I believe the Saints were down or the game was tied and we got the ball back in our territorry with like 16 seconds left. Hebert moved the team into field goal range and Morten Hit around a 50 yard field goal to win the game at the gun. I just remember the dome exploding after the game. Of course nowadays my fav game is any game we win.

FatiusJeebs 01-26-2006 03:02 PM

Who can forget Turley and the helmet toss? Sometimes I wish the summer olympics would im-plement that in the the events. ;0) Sadly though...I remember we lost that game.

The Saints/Rams Playoff Game: I live in StL & had to endure insult after insult in my own home from the rest of my family (Goats Fans). When Hakim fumbled their faces all went white, & I told them they could cram a Ram's horn up their a**!

FanNJ 01-26-2006 03:27 PM

Saints Rams Playoff 2000 What a game.

Last Game of the season 2004 beating Carolina on the road to kill there playoff hopes after the media crowned them a playoff team was sweet. Then the F'in Jets can't close the deal against the Rams ah well a former saints kicker for ya.

That was my favorite, too. That was the 1st year we beat San Fran when it really counted. The Dome Patrol dominated the game!!!!! :bananajoy:

TheDeuce 01-26-2006 04:44 PM

Definitely the first playoff win.

Close second though is the Tampa Bay game last year. We were down by double digits in the 4th quarter, and then the Beer Man took one close to the end zone, and our defense made a huge stop and we punched it in at the end. At the time, it saved our playoff eligibility.

LongTimeFan 01-26-2006 05:38 PM

My best game was when we were losing by a lot of points at the half ( I think ii was 26 points) against the Rams about 5 years ago, our D came out in the second half and crippled Warner, we won in the end, everything went right for us in the second.
Warner was sacked like 6-7 times if I recall

jm 01-26-2006 05:38 PM

My favorite game was one that I didn't get to see. In 1971 I listened to the Saints beat the Rams when Archie played in his rookie season. I didn't see it, but I stayed up all night and listened to it on the Armed Forces Radio service. I was at Danang , Viet Nam

Quote from Roger Staubach in the '70's:

"He (Manning) is the only quarterback in the league who could have made the Pro Bowl on that Saints team."

CheramieIII 01-26-2006 06:00 PM

Was the 63 yard field goal game. It still sends chills down my spine remembering the announcers that day. The stadium was emptying then as everyone figured out that Dempsey was going to attempt a kick to win the game the stadium begins filling again.

LivnaLieTimay 01-26-2006 06:31 PM

Definately the playoff "W" over the Rams in 2000. Waited so long for that day to come plus it was a really entertaining game. Granted I was going crazy in the 4th but nothing comes easy for the Saints, so why should our first playoff victory be anything different, lol.

LongTimeFan 01-26-2006 06:49 PM

"Was the 63 yard field goal game"

I was just a little kid then but my brother who is older than me said he couldn't beleive that kick
and said too that he had chills for over a week after that game.
Gotta love those Saints[/quote]

Live - October 25, 1998 Saints 9 Tampa Bay 3
- It was my first home Saints game. The Dome (and N.O.) are the Mecca of any true Saints fan. All must visit at least once in thier lifetime.

TV - December 30, 2000 Saints 31 St Louis 28
- First half I was litterally laughing myself silly. Second half I barely said a word and crewed all my nails off. But then came the fumble. I sat in awe, staring at the TV nearly in tears. I still get chills when I listen to the MP3 of the radio call. "Brian Milne the most unlikely hero of them all".

This probably is not the greatest but the memory of it is what makes this special -- I was a kid going to the game with my dad -- watching the rookie Archie Manning play the Rams -- on the last play of the game Archie bootlegged around left end for the winning TD.

I was at that game -- I remember the week after they were selling '45' records -- on eone side was a song about the kick - on the other side was the actual announcer calling the play by play --

Saint_LB 01-27-2006 07:03 AM

I remember Fourcade starting and winning the last three games of the year the year that they beat Buffalo in the snow, Whodi. It seems to me that Hebert won some kind of incentive bonus for number of wins that year...even though Fourcade won the last three. Those three wins by Fourcade were just enough to give him the starting position for the next season...and Bobby sat home and didn't play that year...Mora choked when Fourcade came out of the box slow, so he sold the farm to the Cowboys for Steve Walsh....and that's the rest of the story.

Regarding the game with the Dempsey kick against Detroit...I would list it as my favorite Saints game to watch. The playoff game was wonderful, but that last quarter was torture to me.
Anyway, this is what I remember of the Detroit game that day. A buddy of mine and I were about to go out and toss the football. I said to wait for a minute, because we had watched the whole game, maybe there was a miracle in store for us. The Saints had just given up a score to allow Detroit to go ahead at the end of the 4th quarter. With less than a minute left, the Saints returned the kickoff to around the twenty-five yard line or so, and Kilmer came out and hit two quick sideline routes to Abramowicz and Dodd, I believe. That left them just past midfield with only a few seconds left. Reluctantly I stayed around when, much to my surprise, they trotted the FG team out there. When that ball barely snuck over the cross bar, I was in a state of shock. It was one of those games where you just had to see it to believe it. I remember Alex Karrass of the Lions making an appearance on the Carson show and describing the play. He said that him and his buddies just kinda bumped there man and rolled over for what they thought was going to be a good laugh. How surprised and shocked THEY were when the ball floated through the uprights!!!

FatiusJeebs 01-27-2006 08:31 AM

Its great to here all of these games and moments. I knew about the Saints beforehand but not all that well. The year you guys won like 12 games for the first time I think it was '86...believe it or not...even down here in Miami you guys were ALL over the sports news. Every week it was..."The Saints have done it again..." I saw the Dolphins game of '86 where you guys lost the game on the last play because of a holding call. A lot of hype on that game because you guys were doin so good. Rueben Mayes scored and the flag came out. At that time I loved Marino too much and dismissed NO. My being a Saints fan started in 1989. In fact that was another great Saints game I saw. My Saintlyhood began in NYC. I was visiting family and by luck the 2 weeks I was there I saw 2 Saints games. It was the last game of the season and the Saints already knew that they were not going to the playoffs. They were playing the Colts and all the Colts had to do was beat the Saints and they were in. Im not gonna lie...one of the reasons I became a Saints fan was because of their uniforms. I said to myself...man that gold and black looks F!@#$%! awesome! That night...they literally manhandlded the Colts. I think the score was something like 36-9. The Saints defense barely allowed the Colts offense to even move. that night. At the bottom of the screen there was a phrase that said...."The New Orleans Saints are the best team in the league that will not make the playoffs." From that game on...I started learning names....schedules...and yes...even the unfortunate history. I still dream of the day I can make it to the Dome for a game... a playoff game if possible. For 16 years now I always have friends ask me the same question..."Why on Earth do you like the Saints?" My answer...."because they play with more heart than any other team I have ever seen! And they got great uniforms." LOL Why all the losing seasons? I don't know..and I don't care...we will triumph one day. Go Saints Go!!!

dwiley21 01-27-2006 02:00 PM

how bout this heartbreaker

Who can forget the game with the CRAZY ending a few years back in J'ville. The last play of the game and the saints show off their version of the music city miracle/stanford band play and score. The highlight of all saints highlights! I remember being on cloud 9 and then CRASHING Hard as Carney kills it by missing a friggin extra point. Ahh how fortunes can change in matter of seconds. Still a Great finish to a game.
