this is a discussion within the Saints Community Forum; Where did he refer to Hawk in his post????? I actually think that he meant getting Hodge and Howard... You wish. I was just giving him a little nudge to the right pick....

I don't want to see a "shift" to the 3-4 down the road. It usually means a total restructuring of the Defense from line to LB to pass coverage. A shift would mean our D was so bad it wouldn't matter if we we mediocre for another year. If not a total breakdown, it'd be a step back for a year.
I agree with Chaching, Hawk would be great, but not at the loss of a franchise QB. |

4-3 or 3-4, I guess we have the answer!
I could not figure out why this was a question that needed to be answered. We do not have a NT, and we are 3 or 4 good LB's short of what would be needed for a switch. We have no idea if W. Smith, C Grant, Whitehead, or D Howard would be capable of playing the end position in a 3 front for most of a game. D Howard and Whitehead may be able to but Grant and W Smith are pure 4 front DE's.
Of course I cannot back this up. However since you see it on the internet it has to be true. |

I would rather get Hawk. Guys remember....a solid defense with a mediorcre QB can still win a SB. Just ask Trent Dilfer....or you can even ask Jim McMahon.(I think thats how its spelled...;0) Hell you could even ask Ben Roethlesberger (22.8 rating). Defense wins superbowls.... a good enough offense makes a great insurance policy.
WhoDat? Wasn't LaRoi Glover on a 3-4 defense this year in Dallas? Isn't he even smaller than any of our 4 DE's? |

Fatius, he (LaRoi) did as a Nose Tackle, and he posted the lowest numbers of his career. In ALL catagories. Now I'm not sure if he was a 3rd down specialist. In which case his numbers were great.

Thanx BJSim... my point here is that I understand we need certain personnel to execute a good 3-4 but hell...if LaRoi can be used...I'm sure some of our 25 DE's can be applied to the scheme.

You truly are obsessed with the 3-4 and I'm not sure I understand your facination with it. Why would you like to see the Saints deploy such a scheme? It's not a better blitzing package. And, as more teams employ it, it gets easier for offenses to read it. Plus it's harder to draft for because of the need for more and better linebackers.

4-3 or 3-4, I guess we have the answer!
FatiusJeebs,
you are correct, La'roi is smalle than almost all of our DE's. However Glover has always been a decent sack guy and a great run stopper, no matter where he was on the D line. I have yet to see any of out DE's be great against the run. However with the switch yyou never know, I will admit that. What we do not have is the large Vince WIlfork type guy to play NT. |

RE: 4-3 or 3-4, I guess we have the answer!
Its true BJSim....I have trouble sleeping at night thinking of the 3-4. Well...thinking of the days of the Dome Patrol...along with the Steelers, and Cowboys. I'll tell you why I like it. I feel that the 3-4 allows for...good run stoppage although I will admit the 4-3 may be better for that but as we ourselves have seen with the Dome Patrol....it can work. Second, Blitz packages, this formation allows for a ton of flexibility, variation, in short... the 3-4 when it comes to Blitzing does an excellent job of confusing the QB, better than the 4-3 in my opinion. Finally, I think the 3-4 provides better pass coverage...especially for those little middle of the field 5-10 yard type passes. I just think it covers the field and messes with QB's minds a lot better than the 4-3.
