Drew, Leinart..well... gimme Leinart...

... as much as I like the excitement of free agency, right now I am hoping Brees goes to Miami...
... nothing against Brees.. I like Brees... but :

.. as per Drew himself, worst case scenario, he doesn't throw a pass this season.. ok... guess the best scenario is he throws every pass this season... what's the middle-of-the-road scenario? Obviously not all QB's take every single snap during a season... still, Drew is already dinged...

... just about all FA contracts require that the player pass a physical... knowing that Brees is still "in recovery", that physical will likely not include the shoulder, or at least will have some sort of curve to grade it, and, while I'm not a doctor, I think that the best the Saints doctors can do is make an educated guess of where Drew's shoulder is going to be 4-5 months from now...

...signing Brees and passing on Leinart is kinda like choosing a refurbished product over a brand new one... I do have my doubts about Leinart, but not so much doubt that I wouldn't draft him...

.. if Drew Brees had never injured his shoulder, I would've been more than happy with him and AJ, but given the circumstances, I'd prefer to see Leinart there...

... I know some people would think that, because Randy Mueller is pursuing Brees, there must be something to him... but remember that Mueller had his share of not so bright decisions...

RE: Drew, Leinart..well... gimme Leinart...

This is what does piss me off. We have been begging for a Pro bowl QB for like 3 years now, and when we have the chance to do that, and have a REAL shot at the playoffs some of you want to throw that away on a QB that hasn't proven himself in the Pros. There have been MANY wrong choices with first round QBs, and there have been many good picks, but how many of those have made a real impact in ONE season. I can think of VERY few, and those guys weren't selected until mid round. Brees is not the future for the Saints he IS the present. That comment he made was said months ago, and now his doctor said just last week he WILL be ready in May. For some of you nothing is good enough.

TR, you have good logic. That being said, I am encouraged with the WIN now attitude coming from Peyton and the FO. We have some clear past examples of first round QB's that BUST not given time to develop.

Plus, there must be a plan to have Amac develop behind Brees if he is signed.

Other than Bouman holding for Carney....well they are both on their way out of NO...IMHO.

I just don't get this mentality. Why are so many people down on Brees for being injured? Hypothetical question; If Will Smith misses the entire 06 season due to jnjury and you could legally cut him (it's against the CBA to cut someone under this circumstance), would you do it?

Sure, every team would want a Pro Bowl QB, but would every team want a QB coming off MAJOR surgery on his THROWING SHOULDER???? That's a little risky. Nobody's saying he's not a good QB and people have a right to be wary of this kind of injury. And even though Leinart is a rookie, it doesn't mean we should pass up on him just because he's a rookie. If he turns into the next Peyton Manning, and we don't draft him, I'll be pissed.

There have been MANY wrong choices with first round QBs, and there have been many good picks, but how many of those have made a real impact in ONE season. I can think of VERY few, and those guys weren't selected until mid round.
Well most of the QBs selected at the beginning of the draft in recent years have gone to just awful teams. The Saints, even though they have a 3-13 record, are not a bad team. With just a few additions at certain positions (including a QB), and perhaps some stability of having REAL home games, this team can be a playoff contender. Selecting Leinart would work because this is not a bad team, and he's a good QB.

Sweet hypothetical question. First of all, that's a totally different situation. We already have Smith signed, so we don't have to worry about overspending in order to outbid another team. Here's a real good hypothetical question: If Will Smith tore his ACL and MCL, and then became a free agent, and then was demanding more money than 95% of the DEs in the league, would you sign him?

Here is my deal.........Picking up Brees gives us a solid QB, who I will say ONE LAST TIME has been cleared to practice in MAY!!!!!!!!, then with Witherspoon coming in to talk that would give us a solid LB. This gives us the opportunity to use our picks on other positions that are easier to transition into the NFL. That would also include postions like LB, OT, CB, DE, DT, RB, and with Horn playing his final seasons WR. This team is FAR from a playoff team. Drafting Leinart WILL NOT get us there, but being very productive in FA will get us there.

Deuce
He is still guaranteed money if he is under contract. Second of all, If my medical staff gives him the o.k., then yes I would sign him...if he has played at that level before getting injured.

... that's great that he's been cleared to throw in MAY even though right now it is MARCH...

... he has NOT been CLEARED to throw in MAY... it is EXPECTED that he'll be ready to throw in MAY, which means that whether he can ACTUALLY throw in MAY or NOT is not CERTAIN... you don't CLEAR a QB to throw 2 months before his injury is EXPECTED to HEAL... matter of fact, come MAY, the doctors will RE-EVALUATE the shoulder to make sure he is READY to throw, and THEN he will be either cleared or NOT...

..picking up Brees gives us NOTHING until it is proven he can throw effectively again...
