THEORY.... Why we aren't signing so many FAs

Could it be that our new coach knows that he not going to win this year and plans to trade down while stock piling picks and building through the draft? If you sign 10 free agents and draft 5-6 more in the first 3 rounds, you are going to have to cut some good players.

Call Benson cheap but I think the Saints know that they are going to be the biggest draft day traders. Remember this is a first year coach and he will want to build his own team. Big name FAs are great if you are within reach of the Superbowl which the Saints are not.

Unfortunally it will take until the 3rd year for us to really be able to compete even with Brees. I sure as hell home we do sign a FA center to make the calls along the OL because more than anything else, I think that is where we are the thinnest.

To all have a good weekend!

RE: THEORY.... Why we aren

We have signed free agents in areas of need namely 2 LB's, 1 blocking TE and a solid backup for Deuce. I think Payton and his staff know where they are going and know who they want to get them there.

I would like to think that they are being very selective in free agency and not the reverse, that they are missing out on who we really want.

Payton and the gang I believe are doing a good job and I hope they keep on doing their homework before making some snap decision.

I sure hope your right Cher, 'cause Atlanta, Tampa, & Carolina are picking up playmakers left & right.

I doubt that any NFL coach going into this season, or any season for that matter, really believes that his team will inevitably fail.

I'm as eager as anyone to see who the Saints will land in the off-season but there is still plenty of time. The draft has yet to happen and not only that, there will be some June 1st cuts to watch for.

I trust Payton. He seems to know what he's doing. I think signing guys late is his M.O.
Payton said the Saints still have room under the salary cap to remain active in free agency.

"This next period of time is where you have a chance to help yourself and maybe not spend as much money. There's never a science to it. The year we went to the Super Bowl in New York, in 2000, we acquired Lomas Brown, Glenn Parker and Dusty Ziegler, our left tackle, our left guard and our center, after the first wave of free agency," he said. "We haven't exceeded the cap. We're just making sure when we go through this next couple weeks, three weeks, four weeks, we're looking at the right fit."

It's not like all of the guys on our roster suck... we have a good group of talent who wasn't coached properly. Hopefully Payton will be able to bring the best out of them. With a nice draft, we should be able to turn this thing around soon without having to spend crazy money. The number 2 slot in the draft is going to cost a lot of money so I can see why they aren't out there throwing money everywhere.

or the other theory is they don't know what they are doing and suck. LOL I think they are in a nice position heading into the draft, so anything goes now.

agree papz. said it many times that we wen't basically 8-8 the last few years minus last season with this core oif guys and just feel we weren't doing what we should on the feild. all the mental mistakes is what cost us. well and our d stunk up the joint but that may have been about vent stinking it up too. i like payton and think he knows what he is doing. i am excited to see what happens on the field. will be nice to see how much of it had to do with haz and company.

Your team stinks

Agreed. now you let the dust settle from round 1. We will go after some quality backups now to compete but we will see what the draft brings. Then when the cuts happens i think we will dive in and get 1 maybe 2 of the big $$ F/A. I am not counting out a trade or 2 happening for players. lets see how we wheel and deal in the draft first. If it was haz all over again we would have signed some panic picks by now and panicing to make more. The Pats are not freaking out yet so I think there is more to come. Like the crazy amount of FA impact players available so far.
