Saints | Payton does not think team is in good shape
Fri, 7 Apr 2006 21:55:50 -0700

The Associated Press reports New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton was noticeably perturbed walking off the field after the team's first practice of minicamp. Payton said, "We're not in real good shape right now. ... There are a lot of guys struggling with the reps and we've got to get some of these heavy guys up to speed, quick. We're going to press them hard." Payton believes being in shape is a must and that you need to have stamina. "A poorly conditioned football team gets penalties, a poorly conditioned football team holds, a poorly conditioned football team turns the football over," added Payton.

i don't know about the rest of you, but this is exactly what i want to hear, the truth.
i don't want a new coach blowing smoke up my a.. i want to know where we stand.
i like it..............smitty

That is so true. I'm starting to get really excited about Payton as our headcoach.

Agreed smitty... but it still is only April. From the sound of it, Payton's going to whip them up into shape in no time.

I really, really like this guy. I guess Sully better lose some back if he want's to play for us this year.

Golf and sex are about the only things you can enjoy without being good at them.

RE: Payton thinks the team is in poor shape!

I've liked Sean from the get go, the team is in the same shape as they were all of last year, that could have been one of the problems with our bad play last season, just out of shape, blame that on the former coaches and staff.
Payton is a straight shooter it seems, players better be ready for the challenge whether they want it or not..
Anyone attend the mini-camp yesterday?, if so what's your take, come on, give.
I kind of feel sorry for the players in a way, it will be a tough road to week 1

Rest In Peace JoeSam, thanks for everything my friend.

I could never feel sorry for a professional athlete having to practise hard, I mean its their job to keep in shape.

Good to hear some honesty from the coach. Sounds like Coach P is going to get this team into shape. I'm all for it.

RE: Payton thinks the team is in poor shape!

Other news from minicamp I've read from other people that actually went to practice (props to Chad)...

1. Colby is starting in the middle alongside Simmons and Fuji.
2. Chase Lyman looks like our second best receiver next to Joe Horn (Damn right! That's my boy!)
3. Stinchy is going into camp as our #1 RT which I think is perfect for him.
4. Watson getting chewed out by Joe Vitt.
5. Grant looks to be in great shape.

I think it's about that time in the year I start hyping up Chase again... Because after he gets injured, I'm going to hear it all over again.
