SAN DIEGO (AP) -- Cash-strapped San Diego doesn't have the money to help the Chargers build a new stadium, Mayor Jerry Sanders said Friday, opening the door for Southern California's only NFL team to leave the city it has called home for 45 years.

Sanders said he plans to ask the City Council to amend the Chargers' lease to allow the team to begin looking at sites elsewhere in San Diego County before the end of the year. If the team fails to find a new home in the county before Jan. 1, the Chargers would be free to negotiate a deal anywhere in the country.

The Chargers can leave San Diego after the 2008 season if they pay off the approximately $60 million in bonds the city issued in 1997 to expanded Qualcomm Stadium.

the L.A. Chargers... kinda has a nice ring to it...

What's funny is, the deal the Chargers offered the city to stay, was about as opposite as what Benson is getting as you could get. Chargers owners would pay for the new stadium, and allow the city to use it for no fee for whatever they wanted outside of football season. And a lot more just great concessions on their part, and all they asked for was for some land near the stadium to build, I don't know what, and a long term deal. San D was in such disarray at the time with legal troubles for their city council they never responded, and I don't know if the deal was simply pulled or what. But I think if LA had a choice between us and the Chargers, they would take the Chargers. We might be able to close that door, except Tags said he expects to have two teams in the L.A. area. Wonder if the new commish would feel the same.

Yeah here's the deal... Yeah I'll pay 450 million and other buisness kick in another 350 million which is a lot for nothing in return for buisness... then the city would only have to hand over 60 aches of land for the owner of the team to develop and do as he pleases with it... DO YOU KNOW HOW MUCH PROPERTY IS OUT HERE??? Its a catch 22 here, everyone wants to live here but you come and you can't find work that will allow you to stay here... Property value is SKY HIGH. a small shack in say Houma, Louisiana will go for 2 million here. Its not a very good deal for the city... with the budget crisis the city is in here even worse. The city will be better off holding the property... are having to use imminet domain to get it for the owner screw that.

i can imagine how expensive it is there euph. i can see what you are saying. if it was costing that state nothing as whodi acts then they would already have a deal. nothing is free

The mayor is calling the chargers bluff is all... Mayor said hey you can't build it at the qualcom grounds that is a viable staduim still and can still be used, so if you want a new place and you want to build it go ahead. Chargers can't do it and heres why...

Problem 1... the cost of the land will be expensive because land is outregous here. They can't afford to do that... (they can afford to hand over 450 million for a staduim but can't buy land... its to expensive).

problem 2... the deal is chargers pay 450 million for the stadium and local buisness fork over 350 million, they haven't found the backers for this... no one is coming forward with 350 million.

problem 3... there will be no increase in revenew except in a SB year and they aren't garenteed they would get more than one.

problem 4... the money just isn't here its all in land.

its a bluff... and the mayor is going to win this one, for now. Chargers aren't going and there is no worries here in SD... no panic going on.

I'm sorry, unless ESPN is falsely reporting this deal, it says the Chargers will build a new stadium and pay for every penny of it. This is from ESPN. Do you have a link to what you are saying? Why would they offer to pay to build a stadium they couldn't afford? THAT makes no sense.

..not everyone wants to go to San Diego. I sure don't. It's full of Mexicans.

Sure land is expensive in any mayor city... but they are talking about land that is presently occupied by the stadium and its parking lots. So what's the difference?

Tell you want, a freaking empty Qualcomm stadium is not going to be good for the city.
