Saints | R. Bush to petition the NFL to keep No. 5
Sun, 30 Apr 2006 22:20:53 -0700 Les East, of the Advocate, reports New Orleans Saints rookie RB Reggie Bush will petition the NFL this week to allow him to wear No. 5, which he wore at USC. NFL rules restrict running backs to numbers 20-49. Currently, Saints QB Adrian McPherson wears No. 5. |

RE: bush wants #5
If the NFL was to let him wear # 5 he still would have to get permission from Adrian, the # 5 might cost Bush a lot of money unless Adrian was to just give it to him but I would say he'll want money for it, that's if he wants to give it up at all...
Bush just looks good wearing the # 5 so I hope he get's it... |

Several running backs have been turned down from single digit number request. Edgerrin James denied.
This needs to get resolved asap. Merchandise sales are gonna go through the roof. Benson's sudden influx of money should make dealing with that state payment a little easier this year. After the hurricane he could mend his public image a great deal by forgiving that state obligation full or partially for '06. Bush number idea? 6+19= 25 25= 9 (Brees) 2 (to) 5 Bush 20 like Gale Sayers and Barry Sanders 23 like Michael Jordan picked after Sam Bowie |

Deuce didn't get 22 when he was drafted. The rookie may need to get used to disappointment.

There was a lot of Saints sympathy coverage last year because of Katrina. The anticipation to see Bush nationwide is going to create more coverage than NO has seen in many years. Google Reggie Bush Saints in just the news and you get 3620 hits. He will pay for his own contract in ticket sales amd merchandising.

I'd love to see him wear Michael Jordan's number, then again this is coming from a guy who owns 5 different MJ jerseys so I'm a little biased. For his sake, I hope he gets 5, cause that's the number I'm so used to seeing him wear over the last year but if he can't get 5, I'm hoping for 23. Regardless of the number he gets, I plan on buying it the first day it's out.

Reggie Bush came in second in Saturday's NFL Draft, but he's apparently first in jersey orders.
The Associated Press reported Monday that Reebok has received a record 15,000 orders for New Orleans Saints jerseys with Bush's name on the back. That's more than double the number of jerseys the company had taken for last year's No. 1 pick, Alex Smith. Fans ordered these Bush jerseys without knowing what number they will carry. That will likely be determined Tuesday, when the NFL competition committee meets and decides whether to allow the former USC running back and 2005 Heisman Trophy winner to wear No. 5, as he desires. Bush's marketing agent, Mike Ornstein, told ESPN.com he believes there's great value in Bush being able to keep the number. National Subway commercials already refer to Bush as No. 5. "Based on the conversations I've had with members of the competition committee today, I do believe that they will allow Reggie to wear that number," Ornstein said. Although Bush has worn No. 5 since high school, NFL rules do not permit running backs to take that number. In 1973, the league crafted a numbering system so officials could better recognize players by their positions. Quarterbacks are allotted Nos. 1 through 19. Running backs wear Nos. 20 through 49, and wide receivers and tight ends wear Nos. 80 through 89. The league has recently loosened its rules on wide receivers, reportedly due to the volume of retired numbers at the position combined with the number of players at that position. In 2004, running back Edgerrin James, then playing with the Indianapolis Colts, unsuccessfully petitioned for No. 5. Backup quarterback Adrian McPherson wore No. 5 for the Saints last year. http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/draft0...ory?id=2429358 I might have to hang up that custom jersey after all! damn....why couldn't he have been #2 instead?!? lol |
