brees throwing balls to old teammate, quentin jammer
By Kevin Acee
UNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER May 3, 2006 In an attempt to better get inside the head of the men he is covering, Chargers cornerback Quentin Jammer yesterday began running routes as a receiver. Tim Sullivan: Will Arnold terminate Chargers? Because he knows Philip Rivers is busy acclimating to a new position coach and readying to become a starter by throwing with his real receivers, Jammer found another man to throw to him. An old friend. “I'm going to do Pilates with my wife, Jammer said following his conditioning workout with teammates at the Chargers complex. “Then I'm going to run routes with Drew. That would be Drew Brees. Just up the road from Chargers Park, Brees has begun throwing in preparation for his new job as quarterback of the New Orleans Saints. While yesterday was to be Jammer's first day working with Brees, it wasn't Brees' first day. “I've been throwing for almost four weeks, Brees said. In that the beginning of May was his target date to begin throwing following his shoulder surgery in January, Brees was told that must mean he remains ahead of schedule in his rehabilitation. He laughed and said with no small trace of sarcasm: “Only about a month. Although Brees has long acknowledged the possibility that recovery from the torn labrum in his throwing shoulder could take longer, he has always believed he will be ready for the start of the season. Brees would not elaborate on his recovery yesterday. “This is where I've got to smile on the inside and not say any more, he said. “I'm just going to have to shock the world in a few months. He undoubtedly included in that a shocking of the Chargers brass, which in February allowed him to leave as a free agent. Brees relished being coy, laughing frequently during yesterday's phone conversation. “You've got to keep it a mystery, he said, “for all the doubters. He couldn't help but expand a little on his golf game, however, and said he is back to driving the ball more than 300 yards, even though he told himself he'd take it easy. Among his rounds in a charity tournament this past weekend was a 75 that “should have been a 73. He said he hasn't gotten out on the links with Rivers yet this offseason but said to pass on a message. “Tell him I'll give him strokes, Brees said. “But I want a piece of him. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Kevin Acee: (619) 293-1857; kevin.acee@uniontrib.com http://www.signonsandiego.com/sports...3chargers.html |

Holy crap, what a stud. I love this guy already and I haven't even seen him in a Saints uniform. I think he's a smart guy and I think that if he's ready to throw, then he will throw. I don't think he'd rush back before he's ready, especially if he's already been throwing for four weeks! I love Drew Brees.
