Going in to camp, which veterans do you think have to step up to make the team?
Ernie Conwell-Carries a cap number of over 2 million. Thats alot for a backup TE. Jay Bellamy-Age and injury last year doesnt help. Loaded at the S position. Jermane Mayberry-Saints OL is young and revamped and he was a bust last year. Does he fit? Devery Henderson/Bethel Johnson--A report says the Saints are only going to keep 1 deep threat. If Henderson steps up, Johnson will be cut. If Johnson steps up, Henderson will likely be traded. Colby Bockwoldt-I know, a lot of you like him, but Payton brought in 5 new veterans for a reason. You have to think that Polley, Simmons, and Fujita are locks. Fincher is showing progress and Jay Foreman has been solid and has experience in the middle should Fincher falter. Fred McAfee/Steve Gleason-I really believe Payton keeps only one of these guys. Haslett wasted a lot of roster space by keeping too many guys who only played special teams. One of these guys will be out. |

RE: bubble players pre-training camp
I think Mayberry does fit. He is a guard, but we tried moving him to tackle, and switching sides, and basically there was no continuity along the line last season. I think with a little more knowledge of his teammates' styles and tendencies, the entire line will be able to gel better. Mayberry was very good in Philly, and with a good coaching staff here, there should be no reason why he can't be good in NO.
I wouldn't be surprised to see Bethel Johnson go bye-bye. He just doesn't really seem like a Payton kind of guy. It's just a hunch, but if one of those two is going to be cut, I think it'll be Bethel. I hope Colby goes, but he's like a nut chigger, he's hard to get rid of. I see no reason why we can't keep both Gleason and McAfee. |

Come on, don't tell me you've never been somewhere outdoors (most likely in tall grass) and you get a chigger on your nuts. They itch like hell.

chiggers bitting the coaching staff:
Bellamy, Jay - Money is the only reason I can see. tackling machine Craft, Jason - Money again. play has been spotty Thomas, Fred - age but can joey finally step up in year 4. Gleason, Steve - Must accept his role on the team. he is fred's replacements McAfee, Fred - ultimate team player. age, he is not the #1 gunner, try to find me a better #2 in the NFL. NOT Bouman, Todd - last year says it all McPherson, Adrian - does he fit payton's definition of a QB? Conwell, Ernie - big bucks for IR. but still one of the better TE in the game when playing. needs some stick'em Stallworth, Donte' - route running, stick'em and a new alarm clock. last year to do it we will loss him in FA Henderson, Devery - Stallworths replacement next year or a bust. Lacks awareness. needs a wake call also Horn, Chris - solid back up. depends on the rookies. Johnson, Bethel - another stallworth. needs to get his sh-t together. loads of talent gets you only so far. Lyman, Chase - Injuries is it as we all know. Poole, Nate - depends on the rookie Can not go into LB with all the one year deals signed. none seem to fit long term goals of the team. a few are here on a trial bases. Simmone and Polley. Polley my gut tells me wont be here at all next year. but time will tell. OL is hard to judge also. so many new faces. some of the new vets that, to be honest, are nothing more than career backups but have enough talent to play more than one position. not to say they are bad but they are not what you need to get a solid line. there could be a surprise in there some where. hey patdog mine was name christine. they must have hatched from the same nest. |
