Twenty things I learned from early preseason

Spanier's Sporting Blog - SportingNews.com
August 17, 2006

(Yes, I know it's only the preseason, but here are a few observations from week one).

1. Reggie Bush will be better than advertised. Just give him the ball and get out of his way. We'll be laughing at the Texans for decades to come.

2. Rex Grossman will kill the Bears' season if he is the starter. It should be Griese.

3. McNabb might have a better season than I thought. So might the Eagles.

4. Vince Young will not make it in the NFL. It will be a tough career for Vince.

5. The Jets still stink and have no offense.

6. Jay Cutler will be better than Ben Roethlisberger. He looks like he should be starting right now.

7. The Lions are the sleeper team this year.

8. I feel like betting the on Arizona Cardinals to win the Super Bowl. New Stadium, great receivers and a former MVP at QB is a recipe for success.

9. Matt Leinart will impress right from the start.

10. The Raiders, despite winning their first two preseason games, will stink.

11. Aaron Brooks, your career is over.

12. Daunte Culpepper is hiding something. That something might be that he's not ready to play.

13. The Redskins will be making excuses all year. They're overrated.

14. Tony Romo should start for the Cowboys.

15. Terrell Owens, is he really hurt? NO!

16. Brett Favre will wish he retired.

17. All Packers players will wish they retired after winning just four games this year.

18. Mike Vick will return to being a stud and lead the Falcons to the playoffs.

19. Peyton Manning will again bow out of the playoffs. No Super Bowl for Peyton.

20. The 49ers will go 8-8.

Love the comments about Brooks, Bush, Cutler, Young, and Culpepper....The only way Vick will lead the Falcons back to the playoffs is if he uses his legs, because it won't be with his arm....Niners 8-8? That's almost as wild a prediction as saying the Saints will win the Super Bowl this year.

I see what you're doing -

you're telling people not to do something that might otherwise benfit them, but in reality what you want them to do. Reverse - Reverse Psychology.

I'm not buying it for a second.

Some things I'd like to add and comment on...

1. Tavaris Jackson will have a better pro career than Vince Young who will be a bust. His ability to throw as a quarterback is horrible and those launch em up and hope your 6'5 receivers catch it will not work in the NFL. Back to Tavaris... wow is he the total package IMO. Not only can he use his legs which are Vick-like, he's the real deal as a quarterback.

2. The 49ers will shock some people with their vast improvement on all aspects. I don't think they're going to be 8-8, but they are going to play in a LOT of close games.

3. Mike Vick will lead the Falcons into the playoffs especially with that defense they have. It's going to be sack city in the ATL. If he can just manage the game, with his legs or arm, they have a good shot at the NFC Championship game though everything will probably have to go through Carolina first.

4. Tony Romo sucks.

5. Number-wise when it's all said and done, Cutler will have better career numbers than Big Ben. But I don't think it's going to be that Cutler is the better quarterback, it will be because Ben will never be asked to carry the bulk load of the offense on his shoulder. Their running game and defense will always make his job easier.

6. The Redskins only need one excuse... Clinton Portis is injured and it's a valid reason why they won't have as much success as they did last year.

7. If the Bears were smart, they should end this Grossman experiment. Griese is the one that could lead them into the promise land. He's easily the better quarterback.

8. The Cardinals offense should be outstanding and their young defense is stout. There should be high hopes in the desert if Warner can hold up.

9. GreenBay will have one of the best defenses in the league but Favre will have a tough time not throwing picks.

10. The number one sleeper team is going to be the Ravens. They will make the playoffs with McNair leading that offense. Ed Reed, Ray Lewis, and Chris McCallister will rebound and they should make those Pitt/Balt/Indy games a must see.

Vick and he Falcons will suck! They will be a bad as us this yr, no recivers and Vick isn't throwing nor learning anything to benifit their offense...Their D couldn't even stop our ex-oldie RB, so what in the world do you mean playoffs??? I say 6-10

Kerney, Coleman, Abraham, Brooking, Hartwell, Hall, Milloy... their defense looks like a ProBowl roster. And they've proven in the past, not having receivers doesn't mean they can't make it deep into the playoffs. After all they probably have the best rushing attack in the league.

i agree papz... that defense is awfully loaded right now.... i don't know about the best rushing attack though... there's at least 5 teams better than them right now.... the cutler vs. big ben thing is like tom brady vs. peyton manning right now... peyton has the stats, brady has the rings... i think that's how it'll shape up b/w cutler and roesthisberger... who knows though.... cutler may break his vertebrae in the next game and never play again... we all assume way too much.... let's just let the guys play and year's from now we'll debate on who was the better player...

The Falcons led the league in rushing for the past two years (2004 & 2005)... they really do boast the league's top rushing attack.
