The games themselves are solely for entertainment purposes, and have no bearing on whether or not Kim Jong-Il will shove a nuclear device up his a** this week, or next.

Now that is funny.
And True.

I've always liked Power Rankings- even back when the Saints lived at the bottom of them.

Every week during the NFL year I read CBS's, ESPN's, and SI's. I look forward to them.

Why? Because Power Rankings:

1. Force (most) rankers to at least write a little about each team every week. They have to kinda justify the placing and so its much more informative than some puff piece about some rookie or team that every would thought would do well doing well (which is SO much of what is churned out in NFL-land during the season). During the lean years this reason meant at least once a week I could get SOMETHING written to read about the Saints from a major news agency (B&G.NET is still king and homepage).

2. Give you a general good idea of how teams are doing that you are not focused on. I don't know about yall, but I only really try to read up on the NFC South's teams (and Kansas city because its my friend's favorite team and I like to look on the ball about it). Otherwise the only general idea I get about the teams is who the really good and bad ones are (because the record shows that). All the teams in the middle- which is a lot in the NFL nowadays- are hard to tell apart. Come playoff time when you have to have conversations about teams no one locally cares about, thanks to Power Rankings, I know why a certain 8-8 team got in that particular playoff game and can tell others as well. It ups your NFL IQ easily and quickly.

Its not a good definitive source, but it is better than anything else to help you sort through the middle.

3. When a team you don't like does bad, you know they will get at least three major reamings that week with less bias than in full puff pieces. I have read my favorite true NFL statement -"Michael Vick is a poor passer that can't get you back in games with his arm"- more in Power Rankings than anywhere.

4. They are a quick read that is easy to take in chunks (good for when I read them at work),

5. For some teams, a few sentences is all I care to read about them in a week. And since each blip of info is labeled with a team logo, I can easy skip teams I don't want to read anything at all about. Its harder to do that with one of those multi-page mixed up articles (looking at you Mr. King).

College football gets people to expect that rankings can mean something. But the BCS proves that relying on rankings can sometimes steal the fun from the game. NFL Power Rankings are great because they have no authority- they are the best regular tasting of the NFL candy midweek.

Each Power Rankings (except for Dr. Z's as he has gotten crazy the past years) at least has to kinda justify the place of each team in a small space. The enforced brevity brings out the best sorts of insights - the kind that you have to read a whole fluff piece to get normally. If only ten of the explanations are worthwhile, its a better use of your time to read the Power Rankings than the usual NFL articles that pop up on the front pages of our favorite major sports websites.

Bring on the rankings- I actually love when people here on the forum make their own. It is often better than the pros!

I believe in the underdog
it seems like when ever you advance you loose.

I believe we won because philly did not repect us.

The further below radar we can be and still win is an asset.

I want to win this year BADLY i will take any asset Ican get.
not being hyped in the media until the week between the NFC championship and the superbowl is hine by me.

I wish we wer #17 in the power rankings

I dont put stock in them but I do like to see where the talking heads rank us week to week...Evey now and then they will have something mildly insightful that I can regurgitate at a party and sound like I know what I am talking about...LOL

Take a look at the Rankings at foxsports.com they have a couple of different types...One is just what ever the talking heads think the other is called a DVOA or something and is a calculated rankings formula based on defense, offense, division, and strength of schedule...Stuff like that...It pretty interesting if you read how they came up with the formula...although the Saints are ranked really low on it right now because the formula is still pulling data from last year so we are at #17 I think...The writer of the poll even apologizes for this in his comments, saying he would like to change the formula for the Saints but would nullify the other teams in the rankings or something...Check it out

See there is a flaw in that one... baseing the power rankings on last year??? what the hell... THEY MEAN "DIDDLEY" -Mora.

Sorry They are gay... they mean nothing. Look at the stats look at the W-L standings and that is your Power Rankings. Saints are currently rated at a 5-1
