this is a discussion within the Saints Community Forum; Rashaen Mathis??? Hes a guy that needs a year to develop into a quality starter. We drafted Rashean Mathis lastyear, only his name was Keyou Craver. Good point, even though others might have skipped over it in light of some ...

June 1st Cuts
Help me remember, did Craver break into the starting line-up before his injury, or was he still a back-up? I do remember many saying he would have been a late 1st or 2nd rounder after his Junior season, but he put on about 10-15 lbs his Senior year and lost a step. I hear he\'s back down to his 4.4 second weight. Oh, and I hammered Sammy Knight earlier but let me clear the air on him. While I think he\'s lost a step or two and should have been replaced, I also thinkhe is one of best players to wear the Black&Gold in a long time. He\'s one of my favorites If every player on our team had the heart & guts of Sammy Knight, we\'d be working on a 3-peat right now. I also think he\'s gonna make an excellent coach one day, hopefully in New Orleans. [Edited on 9/6/2003 by tweeky] [Edited on 9/6/2003 by tweeky] |

He was about ready to start, he started one game, then the injury knocked him back.

June 1st Cuts
Well, due to my unfortunate work schedule it appears that I stirred up the hornets nest and then wasn\'t around to have fun getting stung!
Pak - nicely done, as usual. Good to see you back around. There are a lot of people here who want to say that there was no value in this year\'s draft or FA (THAT MEANS YOU GATOR!!). While I can\'t argue that the draft was weaker than normal, FA was not. If you guys want to talk value, fine, let\'s do that. Claiborne is the blatantly obvious choice at MLB. The pay difference was virtually nill and he\'s miles better than Ruff. But hey, we did pick up Ashley Ambrose... yeah, there\'s a value move. Why didn\'t we just make a photocopy of Fred Thomas? You guys think Sammy Knight lost a step and you\'re happy with Carter, Thomas, and Ambrose!?! I like the Tebucky trade, we needed him, but we still overpaid. My point is simple. I\'m not comparing this year\'s talent to any other year. I\'m comparing the players we picked up this year to the ones that were available this year. Show me one free agent pick up that the Saints made this year that is a better value than one of the alternatives... show me a pick in the first three rounds of the draft that was a value pick. You can\'t. B/c they overpaid for TJ, they overpaid for Gandy, as of right now the value for Ruff is sickening... could all of these guys pan out? Absolutely, and if so I\'ll eat my words. But as of right now, this off-season cannot be looked at as a success. |

I liked Claiborne a lot too and lost a lunch bet with a friend. I was positive the Saints were going to sign him. I later read there was a knock on him, but I can\'t remember what it was. He was really the only player I thought we shoulda got, but didn\'t. Draft Value, I think 1-3 is about average but we made up for it with 4-7. According to their scouting reports they drafted the 2nd best impact player on D, got the 4th best OT on most peoples list in the 2nd, and drafted the 3rd best LB on their list in the 3rd. But the true value picks up 4-7. Holland is a Bentley clone, mean and nasty. I bet Deuce is practically giddy. Melvin Williams is a poor man\'s Simeon Rice, but needs a year or two. Kelly and Gardner were absolute steals at 6 & 7. I\'d be surprised if both made the final roster, but not shocked. |
