this is a discussion within the Saints Community Forum; Let's say Parcells retires this offseason... do you think it's even a possibility that Payton would leave the Saints and go coach the Cowboys? What if Jerry Jones gave him a call and offered in excess of 5 million dollars ...

Would Payton leave?
Let's say Parcells retires this offseason... do you think it's even a possibility that Payton would leave the Saints and go coach the Cowboys? What if Jerry Jones gave him a call and offered in excess of 5 million dollars a season guaranteed for the next 5 season?
It would be a hard to to pass up don't you think? |

Well even if he did want the job, the cowboys would have to give the Saints something in return just like the Bucs and Raiders when Gruden left. I believe it was 2 first rounders and 2 second rounders over a 3 year span or something of that nature. Either way, i dont think Payton wants to be in that situation with so many players that are totally against the way he does things...ala T.O., Terry Glenn...not exactly the kind of team players Payton seems to prefer.

RE: Would Payton leave?
I wouldn't put it past any coach to leave for another job. Coaches just don't stay at jobs for a good length of time anymore. I just hope he can put a Lombardi trophy in the case before he bolts.

The Saints would have to give permission for the Cowboys to talk to Payton. and Boba's also right in that there would be some serious compensation for the loss.

RE: Would Payton leave?
Time will tell, but I don't think Payton is one of those coaches that has a gun-for-hire mentality like Saban or Larry Brown. If Payton continues to do well, I wouldn't be suprised to see some college and NFL organizations make some big overtures to try and lure him away. But I don't think he'd leave New Orleans as long as things are going well with Benson and the GM, especially considering all negative PR it would generate post-Katrina.

RE: Would Payton leave?
i dont know if payton would leave for the dallas job. consider this: he'll have to win right away, answer to jerry jones, and deal with TO. Here, he ihas total control, and Loomis and payton have a good relationship when it comes to sigining players.

I know in todays money, money, money society; money talks and B$ walks. After watching the LSU game last nite and seeing his boy dressed in Tiger Gear, I think he is staking his claim in NOLA.

Coaching in new orleans is completely different than coaching anywhere else. Here, while all the fans want to see the Saints win, it is pretty much expected for them to lose. And the tolerance here is different than anywhere else. In places like new york, and dallas, and philly, they all expect you to win and be not only in the playoffs, but competing for the Super Bowl year in and year out because past success dictates that. If Payton were to win here, and string together a couple of really good seasons like the one we are having now, he could be a God here. He could set the standard for New Orleans and he would do what no one else has done. Everywhere else, he would be compared to someone who did it before him and it wouldnt mean anything.
