Growing up and watching the Saints, I could remember hearing people say we have one of the hardest divisions in football with the Rams and the 49ers. But no one ever points out that to be the best, you have to beat the best, that's what it takes to become a Champion. I just hate it when I hear that people say teams won, because certain teams had an easier road than others. Its all about the preparation that comes in before the games and in the end, delivering when the time counts. Nonetheless, its just a way of making excuses for our shortcomings.
Living out here in Los Angeles, I heard it time and time earlier this year, Saints had an easy schedule, or the season was set up by the NFL. No one credited them for being a good team. We had a great year last year and I could almost feel that during the 80s and 90s, we had brief flashes of greatness. But when it came down to it, we didn't deliver. Not because of the 49ers, Cowboys, Redskins, but of the New Orleans Saints. So until our boys in Black and Gold hold the Lombardi over their heads, we'll keep making excuses. Who Dat Nation 4 Ever. |

But seriously, I agree -- there were some big-time battles back then with the Niners. But the Niners only prevented us from winning the West outright. It was our failure to put the game away or to capitalize when it counted that kept us from moving on in the playoffs. |

After a few more after thoughts, I'll say this, too: No matter what NFC division the 80's - 90's Saints would have been in back in those days, it would have been difficult, especially with their propensity to not put the game away or to capitalize when it counted and with the strength of the NFC back then.
In actuallity, the only time that I've ever seen a true lack of competition in a division actually keep a bad team dominant is going on right now: the NFC North. The Bears are a joke and have my vote as the worst NFL/NFC champion ever. |

We had a defense but the offense was so-so. That was our problem plus you had mora and his love affair with old cotton top, what was his name? the OC. Carl Smith? I still say it was a little too homo to make it to the promise land. Still have not forgiving Mora for gutting the defensive coaching staff for him. Our loose was the Panthers gain. Coaches and players.
